Instead it is space that is changing as always. Because if the Universe stood completely still time will cease to move also and everything would also be dead. Physics or metaphysics? But as living architects, engineers, creators and entrepreneurs we need to look into the Future and to foresee what is coming. What is the future of CAD?

CAD, or Computer Aided Design has been around for a while now. We have learned to draw lines and squares and perhaps even objects in 3D on our desktops or our laptops.
But we are still stuck behind the desks - but in other disciplines this has already changed! Sales people, journalists and others can now be found working almost anywhere using Smartphones, Pads and keeping most of both operating systems, software and files in the Cloud instead of on their computers or on their local servers.

www.youtube.com/watch

Another line of development can be seen in SF dreams where enhanced reality, holographic designing and such things appear. Perhaps not really feasible yet, but still...I mean we already have multi touch screens and even multi touch tables!

www.youtube.com/watch

So what does all this mean to us working with drawings, creators of the world's Infrastructure in the form of housing, buildings, roads, railways etc? Do we need to change? Or shall we still print, print and then print some more PDFs, DWGs, DGNs, PLAs and so on? And if some nerd tells us that we need to change is there a point to listen or just take another cup of terrible decaf coffee?

These questions were of course rhetorical - OF COURSE WE MUST CHANGE!

First of all we need to think about the environment. Sustainability is important - not producing so much paper and not so much ink and so on that printing requires. And the electricity of course. But there is also the working environment. All those prints creates dust and noise which both are bad for us. And the need to have everything locally creates the need to use heavy laptops that you still have to carry around. Carrying 3 kilos back and forth every working day means carrying a mid size car on your shoulder every year!

Then we must consider quality. Having dozens of copies of our files make us never really knowing if the file we open is the last or even the right one. This can cause massive costs, frustration and even create dangerous constructions if we are unlucky. In the Cloud data only exists in one place.

Then there is time(if there is time!). Installing new versions of software, copying files for safety reasons and ordering new software takes time. Time you could use for better things. In a Cloud solution all updates for all your software is done in one place, not on 50 laptops.

Then we have security. If you keep everything on your laptop and it falls to the floor, gets lost or stolen your also equally lost. If your local server breaks down or the building catches fire you might lose a lot of data. You might retort that it is not safe having your data in Cloud servers and that data should be kept close to you for safety reasons - but if you really compare vulnerability of a local Internet connected server at your office with a Cloud facility with all your encrypted data stored on several servers behind efficient firewalls your local server is in trouble.

And if we raise ourselves and enter into the Cloud - what then?
Then we could use lighter equipment and be more flexible in time and space.

At this point we can start imagine ourselves using a multi touch Pad instead of out standard old laptop or even using our smart phone for some things too.Gone is the times of carrying huge weights around. And parts of the CAD industry has started on this path already.

Graphisoft has for example started their BIMx project

www.youtube.com/watch

Bentley has shown that ProjectWise and Bentley Navigator can work on a Pad.

www.youtube.com/watch

But Autodesk has gone as far as actually creating an iPhone Application called AutoCAD WS and they also have the SketchBook Pro app and more.

www.youtube.com/watch

So right now Autodesk is leading the Pad Race but I would guess the other companies will start working now to get the process rolling.
The multi touch Pad - produced by Apple, Samsund, Asus, Sony or whoever - is the Flexible Future of CAD!

In my mind the Software companies must produce software that can run on all the platforms that all the Pads can run on. Gone are the days when a Software manufacturer could say: "We only make this in one version". Until every software is constructed to run on ANY platform there must be versions made for all.

So let us get used to talking no more about CAD on laptops and desktops as our designs will more and more will be done using software on a pad.

We need to start talking PAD fluently - or die!

But the Holographic Designing then? Yes I would really like to see that coming too....You can dream, can't you?

Finally about the coffee. Stop drinking coffee without coffee, go for real coffee or start drinking something else instead! Nuff said.

The band above tries to make it work for them in media. The film “Cat
People” on the other hand explores the notion that we are, after all,
fairly primitive and that beneath a thin surface of civilization we are
nothing but crude animals – at least some of us. Below the soundtrack -
watch it on Youtube - it's so nice you have to click twice!

www.youtube.com/watch

“See these eyes so green...” And yes - most of us are “green”
in the sense that we are rookies when it comes to handling software.

The film “Cat People” explores the notion that we are, after
all, fairly primitive and that beneath a thin surface of civilization
we are nothing but crude animals – at least some of us.

www.youtube.com/watch

But don't we have quite a sophisticated world with amazing tools,
science and software that can send rockets to the moon and beyond?
Yes we do have created a world that perhaps would appeal to a
Renaissance man like Leonardo da Vinci. Leonardo was of course no
ordinary guy but had extraordinary talents. On the other hand, it was
much easier to be a Renaissance man in the actual Renaissance than it
is now.

Today we have built ourselves a context that is so complex that it
goes far beyond anything Leonardo would have imagined - and he was
fairly imaginative!
But we are trying to demand from every person
that he or she should be able to do everything. Only in the workplace
we should all be doing creative work, administrative chores, sales,
marketing AND handle all the technical stuff we have around us -
including the software. In order to save money on specialized staff
of course. But on the other hand everything is also going in the
other direction forcing us to be more and more specialized. You
should have your niche and stay there too. So we get Social Media
Specialists, Stylists, Communication Strategists and Future Managers.
But the Social Media Strategist has to be good at admin, sales and
perhaps even taking out the garbage. And this is only in the
workplace. At home the complexity continues, but let us not go there.

Let us instead take a dive into software. In a world where
everyone should do everything, everyone is also at one point meant to
tackle all the different kinds of software in the office. And
we have a situation where we are flooded with huge amount of
information through a blizzard of information sources. I have said it
before, but it seems the more information we are exposed to the less
knowledge we get out of it.
We have more information than ever and
know less than ever.

How about if we ask our colleagues then?
Let's face it - we have enormous amounts of communication channels at
our disposal today: e-mail, phone, Skype, MSN, SMS, MMS, Facebook,
Twitter, letters, faxes and stuff. But somehow - I have mentioned
that earlier too - the more channels the less actual real
communication.
We have more communication channels than ever, but
have never felt more alone.

So here we sit in our office starting up our laptop because we
have to make a little change in one of the files in a project.

We know that humanity has learned a lot about the human brain, the
human psyche and human reactions, feelings since the days of
Leonardo. Naively we actually do believe that all this knowledge
actually is built into the software we are about to use. But no!
Leonardo himself might not have immediately understood how to use the
software let alone a poor colleague that is not a full time
programmer. In short - most software today are too complex and too
comprehensive to be as intuitive as we would like.

There are numerous examples of software that really are too hard
to learn. AutoCAD, MicroStation, ArchiCAD, 3D Studio, Photoshop and
Microsoft Word are only a few of them.

First we might think a Manual would do
the trick or a Training class. But Manuals are harder and harder to
find and many software producers produce less and less Manuals. Most
Manuals are digital too – you have no book to have on the side as
you had in the old days. But the Manuals we do have do not do the
trick anyway. They are full of terminology and are so lacking in
padagogy that you have to know the answer already to be able to find
it in the Manual or help section. Another thing about Manuals is they
always focus on a single tool and how to use that. The Manual never
tells you WHEN or WHY or in relation to WHAT or even HOW to actually
set the tool up to actually produce the desired result. So the Manual
is not it. And neither are the vast amounts of so called “Bibles”
or the “All-in-One-Books” or the “Whatever for Dummies” that
are all designed to make money for the publishers. The Manuals are
like Manuel the Bell Boy in the British TV-series “Faulty Towers”,
never having any information and causing confusion. But this time leaving us to
say “Que?”

Then we would guess that the Support
department for the software would be able to help us. If we are lucky
we actually get a living person on the phone that even speaks our
native tongue. Then we have to explain the situation to that poor
Support guy for him or her to guide us. Imagine a seven year-old boy
inside a 747 trying to explain to the air traffic controller that he
needs to land the plane and imagine what the controller is in for at
that moment. Not an easy situation to be a Support guy.
And there
are too few of them heroic types to go around. Support – I don't
think so.

But a Training Class using course
materials for three or four days then? Well, the software is usually
so complex that four days would only scrape slightly on the surface
of it. And even if the trainer is the “Deepak Chopra of Software”
chances are that the students forget 75 percent of what they might
have learned after about five weeks. And the course material will
most lightly suffer from the same “disease” as the Manuals and
the “Bibles”! So training might not work so well either.

What then remains is the actual
software in relation to us humans.
As most of us are neither
rocket scientists nor Nobel Prize winner material - but only users
who want to know how to design a house, a bridge, a chair or
something – we need a software that is simple to use, intuitive and
consistent. But a quick look into several software products reveals
that the software we have to settle for today is nowhere near our
ideal product.

The first problem is the complexity.
Just as people today are faced with the impossibility of being good
at everything, software suffers from the same target. Every software
is trying to be a Jack of all trades. Every simple drawing software
tries to be both Disney and Pixar too and every word processing
software seems to have the nee to produce websites and newspapers
too.

It is simply too much. And the cause of
this has nothing to do with user needs. It is all about competition
for market shares.

Other issues, perhaps caused by the
complexity, is inconsistency, lack of logic, lack of pedagogy, too
much special terminology and too many ways to do the same thing.
There are examples of software features named one thing in one place
and named differently in another place in the same software. There
are also examples of cases where there is no way to actually even
guess what the software wants you to do at a specific moment. There
is no naming standards either so terminology used in different
software can mean different things. There quite a few instances where
the chosen term in the dialog box does not make any sense at all. The
only way to learn is to make repeated errors, talk to others who have
don that too plus to call for Support.

It seems like there is no real
fruitful connection between programmers, users and the real world. There seems
lack quite a bit in consistency checks and pedagogic checks. In short – we need a software
revolution!
As we can conclude, there are no “CAD People” - no
people made for software. So we just have to start making software
made for people instead – let us make “PeopleCAD”!

www.youtube.com/watch

Or shall we continue doing things like
we have always been doing - “...putting out Fire – With
Gasoline”?

Do not forget to visit the Loord!

Yes folks, I will write stuff here now and then - but do visit my other blogs too!

There is of course interesting to follow if there will be readers for smartphones analogue to the AutoCAD WS for iPhone. Will there be readers for the other platforms too? Windows Phone and Android....
Perhaps!

But now there is perhaps another item hotter for a CAD reader - the PAD! Note that there are not only iPads out there - almost every brand is trying to get a market share here. There will be a "pad invasion"! As we in Sweden call a toad a "padda", the obvious nickname for those items are "paddor", getting almost a Biblical Egyptian connotation to them. If we are now infested with pads we must wait for the mosquitoes next. Seems there will be a hardware war on the pads.

It all reminds me of the Spaghetti Western "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly".

www.youtube.com/watch

But who is really the Good here? We know that the former mayor of Carmel-by-the Sea Clint Eastwood was the Good in the Western, but how to choose between pads?

A crucial element would of course be, for us CAD nerds, if the Pad can handle our CAD viewing needs! And a crucial thing for BENTLEY would be to get Microstation working for nore than one platform too.

As the smartphone really is too messy to really see and a laptop to heavy to bring out into the field - a pad might have its place for us cadders.
But they are not yet strong enough to really work with in regards to MicroStation - but to read dgn files YES!

So my answer to the question in the title is not to choose one - but to choose ALL! Users should not be forced to choose hardware or platform based on software limitations!

As Bentley have splendid developers - Go for Gold!

I also hang in other places: Loord Design's webpage is one of them where I have facts on Loord Design.

There is also a Loord Design blog on Wordpress.com where posts are written sometimes in English and sometimes in Swedish(try to learn).

As I also, apart from architecture, teaching and CAD, am into journalism, communications and development there is of course a website for that - the Key2Insight website.

Connected to that website there is also a wordpress.com blog - the Key2Insight blog.

We have been waiting, waiting and then waiting some more. For soon twenty years we have been expecting that Autodesk will finally see that architects and designers love to use well designed tools too. We do not want to be restricted to the regular ugly black or silvery grey box that PCs (desktops or laptops) usually are contained in. Just putting a color or a fancy design on the laptop lid does not do the trick - when we work we don't see that side anyway! And when we do not work we keep that laptop in its case...Think it through...We have never understood the logic of trying to design beauty using ugly tools. We have always glanced enviously at the graphic designers who could use the sleek Macs in their work. The only exception in the architect world has been ArchiCAD and thank God for that exception. I guess a part of that software's success among architects can be attributed to the Mac version. There even was a Mac version of MicroStation at one time but then Bentley gave up that idea for some reason. But now the Autodesk Giant has awakened! Two things on the horizon - AutoCAD for Mac and an AutoCAD App for iPhone. Starting with the App - yes it i working! You can actually upload a drawing and see it on your iPhone. The app is called AutoCAD WS if you want to check it out. Just tried it myself. So already there... And according to Autodesk the AutoCAD 2011 for Mac is in the pipeline. And then we will be better off to choose which tools we want to use right?

But now interesting questions arise - if Autodesk goes Mac and ArchiCAD has been Mac all the time - What will Bentley Systems do? Get back on the Mac wagon with MicroStation or get permanently lost? Or all the other basically PC based software systems out there? And as there is an iPhone app for DWG already there - can we expect Graphisoft and Bentley to create apps for ArchiCAD and MicroStation too?

The future is a great place - starting in a moment......

Experimenting to see....

As life goes on we all have to face all the tunes that comes our way - We can choose to get frustrated when things do not turn out as we expected or learn from the experience.

This also is the case for projects, training and CAD - and for BE Blogs.

I am now trying real hard to figure out the best way to run a blog here . and humbly must say "Still learning".

One day soon I will get the hang of it - or face that I messed up and go for help!

Only really stupid men think it is unmanly to ask for help - as far back as the Stone Age and even further back men always hunted in teams.

Why are Ice Hockey, Baseball and Basket ball popular among men - TEAMS!

I forgot to mention Football for a reason.. In Sweden we call the sport the Americans might like to call "soccer" FOOTBALL! AS the players use any part of their bodies except for their hands for most of the time. As an exception there is an occasional throw to start from the sideline. In the sport Americans call FOOTBALL the players use their hands most of the time. As an exception there is an occasional kick by a designated player only there for that task.
A room equipped with a stove and an oven you might like to call a kitchen even if there is also a sofa there that you on occasion let someone stay the night on. The main purpose is to be a kitchen.
So Europeans do have a hard time dealing with the term football. In Sweden we call it "American Football"

But those two sports are also perfect examples of teams working together helping each other.

It is said on Swedes vs Finns that "when a Swede gets into trouble he goes to the Prime Minister and tell him "you gotta do something about this" - the Finn on the other hand hangs himself manly in the attic."

I will be so Swede.....

Another Look another Reality?

The BE sure looks different now and time to figure out how it actually works now after summer vacations....

Now and again people ask "What kind of computer hardware and system do I need to run XM or V8i?". Being knowledgeable I know that I can find that information, after istalling the software, in the ReadMe. But if you want to know beforehand in order to calculate the total of you investment in MicroStation including possible costs for updating your machines- what to do? The obvious answer would of course be "go to www.bentley.com and search for the information there". So I did just that. Pretended that I had no knowledge on where to look and just plunged into the website. In the top hand corner there was a "search" - BINGO! But then what should I write there to get the information?
I tried with "System requirements MicroStation" and got 2873 hits! None of those in the first page seem to cut the cake. I then tried "hardware requirements MicroStation V8i" and got 2862 hits - none of the ones in the first page was relevant - again..

So it seems to me that we are not making it too easy for new users to enter the MicroStation scene - shall we do something about that I wonder? Wouldn't it be nice if more people actually got a chance to discover the wonders of MicroStation? Making a better greener future even more possible.....

The issue of Naming is a toughie.....

Taken from the article linked above "Keep in mind the following rule of thumb about the name of the software: it has to be easy to understand, easy to pronounce, and easy to remember; it must be short and dynamic; must be usable for a number of years and must be legal. "

What name then shall we choose for the next MicroStation? The 2004 was related to a year, the XM was not related to much but there are suggestions and the V8i....well there were quite a few suggestions on the "i" suffix if you remember ... All of them perfectly good but the association to "AutoCAD 2000i " and all the car engines stuck a bit in our minds......maybe we should loose the V8 all together to get rid of that fuel consuming non-sustainable link once and for all? Are there any takers for V9? Or is that too related still?

Well we could go for the BE brand connection. AS BE stands for Bentley Empowered(does anyone remember that?) we could argue for a BE related name. There are at least 43 other meanings for BE of course...Anyone keen on BE1?

If you look at some competitors then - Autodesk go for the year numbering now even though the year of the release is one year before the number(2011 is out there already in 2010) . Graphisoft are strictly into numbering - now 13.

Talking Autodeskian the new MicroStation if released 2012 would be called 2013 but if we stay clear of the stupidity let us call it the same year - MicroStation 2012!

Talking Graphisoftian the new MicroStation would be called, if I have counted correctly, MicroStation 16!

The perhaps last resort is the fantasy solution. For fun take a look at this name generator ! Perhaps one of those names are not the ideal name for the next generation "Stationists" but you never know - Avatar was after all a success! Have fun!

I find that clients in Sweden have at least three different versions of MicroStation at their offices - 2004 Edition, XM and some V8i. Apart from the obvious reason to update to the latest version available (getting all the new and possibly improved tools) and likewise obvious reasons to keep older versions(other applications linked to a version, fear of new things and a low training budget) are there yet other reasons to prefer one version over the other? I wonder about this......

The first thing that springs to mind isthe question "What tools do I really need in my daily work and are there tools in later versions that handle these needs best?"

The second question might be " Are there new tools in a later version that could improve my daily practices?"

The third could then be "Are there new tools in later versions that could not only improve but even extend my daily practices?"

If the answers to all these questions are "NO" - then of course stick with the 2004 Edition!

But if one or more answers tend to be "YES" the plot thickens.......

So what tools do You find the most important tools in Your daily work and that resides in XM or V8i?

And what tools would you want to see improved, introduced or reinvented in the next MicroStation?

Keep suggestions coming in - you are in the driving seat of a V8!

Hi Friends,

If you scan the web there is a lot said about the recession, management and leadership right now. Seems like we want to go somewhere but do not now exactly where. So we do nothing. Read one article compairing Management the traditional was to dinosaurs bound to be extinct and that Leadership will follow.

But are we not past that point already? In the new Internet Era with Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and of course Blogs such as this one - what is "leadership" ? I would guess that today change in most directions is not originated from the top of organisations or huge firms. Instead change happen anywhere, anytime and through individuals and coming from all over.

So what does an engineering firm do now? Lie down and die? The Engineering 1.0 firms with hierarchy structure and bureaucracies are bound to fail. The slightly more modern 2.0 with leaders at least open to suggestions and a more flat organisation will perhaps survive - for a a while...

But what is Engineering 3.0? I have a few ideas on that......but I do not want to spoil your own imagination by being teacher 1.0 and just telling you. I trust you to invent yourselves!!!

Let us have a lively discussion on what kind of MicroStation future we can create together!

Microstation hm.....?

I think we all need some new way to learn about our Architectural heritage. Today I suggest "punkitecture".
Goethe allegedly said that "architecture is frozen music". Today I can reveal that Modernism is Frozen Punk!.

And punkiest of them all is Mies van der Rohe..... :-)

Hi all Bloggers!

We are about 367 bloggers in BE Communites right now so if we only post 1 post a year each we could with a little planning have the pleasure of reading a new blog post every day! Of the bloggers 105 i run by Bentley employees, 71 are Group blogs and 191 are peer blogs. But we do not all post only 1 post a year of course. Some of us has only posted once - ever, but some find blogging a perfect way to communicate interesting things on Bentley software. Some even dare to step outside the software box and blog on other things. 8 of the 191 peer bloggers have reached the magic number of 10 post or more since the start. Only about 12 of the 71 group blogs have reached "the 10". Of the Bentley employees, 20 blogs have achieved the magic number. This means that only 40 bloggers of us 367 bloggers use the BE Blog on a more regular basis - only 11%. If we take a look at "the 10" for every blog type separately the percentage is 17% for group blogs, 19% for Bentley employees but only 4% for peer blogs.

I interpret these numbers as low. I also see them telling me that Bentley employees not surprisingly are more frequent bloggers than the rest of us.

How can we get more active? Thinking honestly about myself I do not read as many other posts as I should/would like and I comment almost none of them. This is far from perfect. Maybe this is due to the fact that I find it hard to actually navigate to find hot blog spots. :-)

Another thing might be that bloggers that blog usually blog in several places (I myself blog in 3 places plus Tweet). BE Communities blog system has yet failed to be integrated into systems like ScribeFire, LiveWriter and other blogging tools many of us use to run our blogs. To integrate BE blogs with those would be an improvement and I am told that something might turn up here - I still hope!

So ease to find blogs, ease to blog and to customize our blogs would lead to more active blogging!

Do not hesitate to disagree or to say YES, YES!, Yes!

Coaching, Communication and CAD - the connection

Hi again folks,

As some might have seen I am now also into coaching and mentorship and run the business The Key2Insight for this. A coaching approach is also benificial to all client relation businesses including CAD education, engineering, journalism or any entreprise for that matter. A coach will not tell you what to do but assist you in the process of finding that out for yourself. A mentor, on the other hand, will.....

Do not hesitate to ask me if you have questions on coaching - I am into coaching to make the world a better place!
