Bentley Software Around the World - The Dubai Mall

One thing I've always enjoyed is architecture.  Before coming to Bentley I really hadn't explored how things were being built.  I've leaned that Bentley software is used in a lot of things we see or hear about every day.

This is the first part of a series where I will outline extraordinary projects that you may have heard about due to their scale, exquisite design, or even record breaking status.

The Dubai Mall

The first project that caught my eye is the Dubai Mall.  Not only is the scale of this project very large, but the amount of time and money that is has taken to build it is enormous.  Previously, I saw something on the Discovery Channel and was surprised to hear that Bentley software was used to plan and model the mall.

The mall is almost complete and will open August 28, 2008.  It covers a total area of 12.1 million square feet with 10 - 15 individual smaller malls built inside it, consisting of 9 million square feet of shopping retail space (comprising of a total of 1200 stores).  Featured attractions include the world's largest gold souk with 220 retailers; the 850,000 ft² Fashion Island, with 70 flagship stores dedicated to haute couture as well as the Middle East's first Galeries Lafayette department store; one of the world's largest aquariums; an Olympic-sized ice skating rink; a 22 screen movie theater, the largest in Dubai; Oasis Fountain Waterfall; WaterFront Atrium; a view of the (soon to be completed in late 2009) world's tallest building, Burj Dubai.  The mall is expected to attract 30 million visitors in the first year of operation. CCC, the main contractor building the mall, used MicroStation V8 for more than 150 high-quality images for design check, approval and marketing purposes initially.  They also developed an automated BIM Based Quantity Surveying (QS) process using Bentley software.  Using the old process, the company would need to employ a team of QS engineers that manually generated over 1 million spreadsheets!  The automated BIM QS system saved them nearly 10 million dollars in man hours and unused concrete material.
