ABD SS6 - QuickConfig

QuickConfig Standard deploys a simple AECOsim Building Designer SS6 network configuration for immediate use or as a template for testing and/or further customisation.

In brief run the:

  • first batch file to set up the workspace and a test project
  • second batch file to connect each workstation to the network
  • third batch file to set up each user's preferences

Detailed instructions and background information are here:

ABD SS6 QuickConfig Standard - Deployment Guide

The required files are here:

ABD SS6 QuickConfig Standard - Deployment Files

Use scenarios:

  1. New users - Create mapped drives P:\ and W:\ on your network, run the installation as delivered for an immediate working configuration.
  2. Existing Users - Use the subst batch files to create a local test installation to be used for trialling integration with existing standards and workflows.
  3. Training  - Use the subst batch files to create a local installation for training and experiment.

More posts will follow covering the use of and additions to this configuration.

Troubleshooting:

1. When initially installing that the files are unzipped into C:\BentleyDownloads\ABD_SS6_QuickConfig_Standard. Sometimes when unzipping the download a duplicate folder can be inserted (C:\BentleyDownloads\ABD_SS6_QuickConfig_Standard\ABD_SS6_QuickConfig_Standard) in which case the various copy operations carried out by the batchfiles will be disrupted.

2. If you have cause to repeat the installation, delete the contents of P:\ and W:\ drives (having backed up any data files that you want to keep!) and also ensure that (if it exists) the file C:\ProgramData\Bentley\AECOsimBuildingDesigner V8i Ss6\WorkSpace\Standards\ZZ_ABD_SS6_CompanyConfig.cfg is deleted too.

  • Hi Adam,

Without getting into detail, this comment thread isn't the place for that, take a look at the AECOsim PCF files. All of the project specific variables are listed in there with brief descriptions. You can use the PCF as a guide to the variables that could be set in the company configuration file. Generally using the '<' prepend operator will ensure that the company resource is read first. Please post any follow up questions in the AECOsim | speedikon Forum where we can go into more depth.

  • Thanks for this, it has provided a good starting point for configuration.

As this is our first deployment of AECOsim, is there anything documenting what else should/could be networked in a shared working environment?

I note that there are a lot of config variables still pointing back to the local dataset that would in my view, make sense to be pointing to the company dataset i.e. When I drop a section line on my model, AECOsim automatically defines the drawing and sheet models, but it seems to pull the drawing borders from the local dataset, rather than the networked company default which everyone is looking at.  I know and have re-defined the variable in this instance, but I am sure there must be many more like this.

Also, our target is to have a system which allows our teams to draw in the quickest manor, with a focused set of standards, i.e. the wall types, doors etc that we typically come across, which is fairly limited.  The intention is to create these in the company standards, and then presumably, I can then tell AECOsim to stop looking at these elements of the local dataset, so we don’t see things that are not relevant to us?

    Thanks in advance,

    Adam.

  • Konrad, Please check troubleshooting point 1. above, is your unzip  location correct?

  • Hello, I seem to have a problem with running the main deployment file, the folder structures don't actually copy into the P and W drives properly. I.e. there's only the ABD_TestProject without any other files within it. Has anyone got a solution for this? Thanks!

  • Using "\\computer\SharedFolder instead of P: or W:" is covered in the document downloadable above: Appendix 3 – Customising WorkSpace and Project Locations.

In brief, the easiest way to do this is to set up locally as decribed in the document using the batch files with 'subst' simulated P and W drives.

Once that is complete and tested:

    1. copy the contents of P and W to the network locations

    2. amend "\\computer\SharedFolder\Maintenance\Template_ABD_Company_Startup.cfg" before deploying it, changing P: and W: statements to the correct locations.

    3. amend the "set WorkSpaceDrive=w:" line in the two batch files to "set WorkSpaceDrive=\\computer\SharedFolder": QuickConfig_ABD_Standard_CreateUserPreferences.bat and QuickConfig_ABD_Standard_DeployStartUpConfig.bat

  • This maybe a dumb question but could you explain the process if we want to use \\computer\SharedFolder instead of P: or W: ??

I guess a simple search and replace in batch files will not be sufficient ( // ou \\ for example )

    regards,

    Xtov

  • Hi Bill and Morgan,

I think you are asking about related aspects of the quickconfig. The start up configuration is the crucial file. This tells ABD where to look. It just has to be located in the C:\ProgramData\Bentley\AECOsimBuildingDesigner V8i Ss6\WorkSpace\Standards folder on each machine. It will then redirect the configuration to your network.

To change from P or W drives just change the drive letters and/or paths in the ZZ_ABD_SS6_CompanyConfig.cfg (preferably in the template C:\QC_Demo\Wdrive_ABD_SS6\Maintenance\Template_ABD_Company_Startup.cfg before deployment.

To discuss in further detail please can you either ask a question in the Building Analysis and Design forum or, if you have details that you do not want to share in public, open a Serrvice Request.

I'm glad to have feedback and look forward to discussing this with you both.

    Regards

    Marc

  • Hi Marc,

I was hoping you would be able to help me. I have worked through the guide and it works great when mapping my drives locally to my machine. But I am finding it impossible to get ADB to find workspace and project data located on my network (page 11 of the guide).

If you can offer any help it would be really apprecaiated. Please contact me over private message if needed.

  • Hi Marc, I am working through your useful guide. I am however foxed by the use of the startup configuration file. I can see what it is designed to do but am not sure how abd knows to start using that configuration file rather than the defaults. Thanks. Bill

  • Hi Xavier, Sounds like we need to continue this is a separate discussion, I'll contact you.

  • Oups! I correct myself: the guide is help to configure three datasets, but we have some problems to configure three datasets for datagroup data.

    Best regards,

  • Hi Marc,

The guide is very, very interesting! Thanks a lot! If I understand correctly, the guide is focused to configurate two datasets: Company (it's a copy of default dataset), and project.

Well, in our office we have AECOsim SS5, and we configurated three datasets:

1- Default_NM: is the dataset installed with Dataset_NM executable. The path is: C:\ProgramData\Bentley\AECOsimBuildingDesigner V8i Ss5\WorkSpace\BuildingDatasets\Dataset_NM

2- Company: is the dataset of our office, and the path is in the network:

        T:\EiPM Dataset

3- Project: is the dataset of every projecte, and the path is also in the network:

        T:\EiPM Projects

In AECOsim SS6 is possible to configurate three datasets? how?

    Thanks a lot!
