Scalable Terrain Model - raster draping is not propagated to all Projectwise users

We  have a problem with STM and raster draping. We have a STM created from complex terrain model (InRoads) and a set of 160 ecw rasters attached via raster manager. Then we drape all these rasters onto our STM. Dgn file and stm are checked in to ProjecWise.

It works fine for a single user. The only user who can see rasters drapped onto the STM is the one who set drapping.

all files (ecw, dgn, stm) are stored on ProjectWise.

I can not sort it out. any help is appraciated.

thanks.

  • Are your DGN, STM and Raster Image files all in PorjectWise? Are your STM and Raster Image files checked out of ProjectWise when you check out your DGN file? If not you will need to do:

    Open ProjectWise Explorer
Drag and drop files into folder in ProjectWise
Right click on dgn file > Set > run Scan References

This will associate your files so that when you check out your DGN file your other files will be checked out. You must have Draping set on all of your raster images in Raster Manager for them to be draped. Are you using the following steps to do your draping?

    To drape an image:

    1. Open up raster manager

    2. Right click on the title bar that says file name, description, etc and you'll get a menu. Make sure draping is checked so the draping column will display in raster manager.

    3. Now on the title bar with file name, description, etc look for an icon that looks like a small blue wavy mesh. In this column make sure there is a check mark in the row the image name is in to make sure it will drape.

    4. In Microstation go to tools - visualization - materials - define materials.

    5. In the Material Editor go to palette - open and load dcdrape.pal

6.You should see dcdrape listed in the material editor now. Expand it and then right click - assign and click on one of the triangles of your surface

    7. In the top left corner of your view click on the View Attributes button and change the display style to Smooth and the image will drape.

  • Adam,

I have attached a document about STM and Draping.

  • Hi, thanks for your reply. I have no problem with drapping rasters onto STM. It works seamless. The problem is that other users can not benefit from that. Thyy can open dgn file with stm but rasters are not drapped. Only the user who set drapping on can see rasters drapped on.

We can not check-out raster files, these are read-only. DGN file and STM file are checked put, raster drapping is set. It looks great. STM and dgn file are checked-in back to Project Wise. Another user is oppening dgn file, he can see STM file but with no draping.

I hope I am clear enough now.

    Best,

    Adam

  • Do the raster images show Red in Raster Manager? If the raster images show Red in Raster Manager then it means that the raster images cannot be located and they will not be displayed. The raster images must be where your DGN file can locate them so that they can be displayed and draped. If the raster image file names show as black in Raster Manager make sure Draping is marked in Raster Manager on all of your raster images that you are wanting to be draped. You can it up in ProjectWise where your raster images will be checked out as Read-Only.

  • Rasters from raster manager are visible to any user as 2D not drapped rasters. All are displayed in black in raster manager. As I wrote everything works fine for a user who edit STM to drape rasters on. Rasters are drapped on the STM.

When drapping rasters in STM dialog we tried two options: copying rasters and moving them. In both cases results are the same. Everything works just fine for a user who drapped rasters and all other users can see rasters as they are displayed from raster manager and no rasters are drapped onto STM (STM is dispaled in smooth mode). when another user want to have rasters drapped on he need to edit stm and drape rasters again. It works fine for him but now he is the only one who can benefit from drapped raster.

We are not using pure Descartes. We have PowerInroads SS3 08.11.09.722

  • Adam,

I may be wrong about this, but I did not think that you could display STM files in InRoads and that you must use
Descartes to display STM files. In Descartes you can do Export an STM fie and create an TM in your DGN file. You can then attach your raster images and mark draping in Raster Manager and drape your raster images by selecting your TM element when you do the following steps in InRoads.

    1.) Tools - visualization - materials - define materials.
2.) In the Material Editor go to palette - open and load dcdrape.pal
3.) You should see dcdrape listed in the material editor now. Expand it and then right click - assign and click on one of the triangles of your surface
4.) In the top left corner of your view click on the View Attributes button and change the display style to Smooth and the image will drape.

Please look at the attached link.

In Descartes open 3D design file that STM file is attached. In Scalable Terrain Model highlight STM file and do File > Export STM to TM. You can then use the TM to create your TIN.
To give the TM a name if required click on the TM and click on the "i" Element Information button and name the TM in the Element Info dialog in the General tab section.

If this is not what you are wanting can you attached screen shots of what you are seeing?

  • Frank,

We have Inroads SS3 with this release we get Descartes but we need to activate it and there is additional licence usage. all users have Descartes activated. All can create and view STM with rasters drapped on but only when they set drapping on their owen.

For now have to create 10 copies of stm and each user has his ovn copy on ProjectWies. This the only way we found have drapped rasters visible to everyone. As you can inagine we are not happy with tihs workaround.

Our STM was created from our Complex Terrain Moel wchich was created from combined sources (breaklines, LiDAR data, MLS, etc). So we use opposite workflow to what you suggested - we CReate STM from TM just to speed up reviewing it and to increase drapping resolution which is limited for dcdrape material to 1600x1600 pix.

Thanks for your help. I think we will need to log SR for that issue.
