POINT CLOUD TO 3D SOLID, how too?

Hi Karl. I ve recently created solids for nine bridges out of point clouds in just one day with Bentley Descartes. Just deck and abutments and I added no details as safety barriers or light poles (I had just ordinary concrete road bridges. Yours seems to be far more complex). With Descartes you have a tool model by section and you can create 3d solids with it. Then producing 2d drawings is a matter of creating section call outs and adding some annotations. As I remember from your winning be inspired presentation you are familiar with this part of workflow.

Search YouTube for Descartes in civil workflows and you will get few videos that will help you for sure.

thanks for the great tip Adam,, we currently dont have Descartes,, just microstation v8i and SS2 inroads.

As far as i know now bentley will allow you to use any software from their portfolio if only you have select subscription. You can try using microstation tools to mimic Descartes model by section functionality. But I d suggest even renting Descartes for a month. Alternatively you can look for open source software. I believe I've seen one from one university from the USoA.

i have seen countless demos on point clouds showing amazing 3d solids piping as a result and by-product of this technology. what am i missing here? forgive me as this brand new and our first survey from a point cloud, spent half a day researching this

I'm at application engineer for Descartes in the UK. I'd be happy to do a demo for you, if you want to send me the POD I can prepare the demo using your data to get you started. If you're competent with MicroStation then working with point clouds in Descartes is not too difficult. As Adam says the Model by Section tool is perfect for this type of task, and takes all the pain out of moving the ACS around (it's all done automatically).
