What are the limitations to Bing Map usage?

Hi,

I'm currently taking advantage of the Raster Manager's ability to link to the live Bing Maps. An excellent enhancement.

What I'd like to know is this. Is there a documented list of limitations when using this aerial imagery?

For example, I'm not able to clip out (save an area as a file) the images using Descartes.

I'm not able to set a clip window around my area of interest - I recieve a message that says "Raster image is currently reprojected".

I am not able to drape the imagery onto a terrain surface (the triangles from a surface written into the DGN).

Are there other known limitations, or tools that do not work, with this streamed imagery?

    Hello Michael,

    Bing Maps are only a layers that we bring being read only and it cannot be manipulated nor it cannot be incorporated into the design file.

    Hope it clarifies.

    Michael,

    Bing Maps are viewed across the network and are Read-Only and do not resided on your workstation.

    If you are wanting to clip the Bing Map then try the following.

    In Raster Manager double click your Bing Maps
    Then will bring up an Element Information box
    Under Geometry > Geocoding you will see Inherit GeoCs from Model
    Change Inherit GeoCS from Model from "Not Inherited" to "Inherited"
    Raster Manager > Edit > Clip
    Choose your Clip settings

    This will clip your Bing Map. When you exit your DGN file and reopen your DGN file you will have to attach your Bing Map again because InheritGeoCs from Model was set to "Inherited". Your Clip will be temporary and will no longer be available once you exit your DGN file.

    If InheritGeoCs from Model is set to "Not Inherited" then your Bing Maps image will be reattached when you open your DGN file. Changing InheritGeoCs from Model to "Inherited" must be done to all you to temporarily do a Clip in Raster Manager.

    Michael,

    There are indeed several limitations with Bing Maps layer, most of the because the legal agreement doesn't allow to copy areas of Bing Maps attachments.

    Here is the list:

    • It's not possible to "Save As" a Bing Maps attachment to a different raster format in Raster Manager.
    • It's not possible to add a Bing Maps attachment to the "Raster Convert" dialog in Raster Manager.
    • When publishing a DGN that references a Bing Maps attachment to i-model, the Bing Maps attachment is detached if the raster "Publishing Options" setting is set to "Reduce Size".
    • Bing Maps cannot be attached to DWG design files.
    • Bing Maps cannot be attached to V7 DGN design files.
    • Bing Maps are detached when DGM model is exported to Google Earth.
    • Bing Maps are not visible in the output of the "Save Image" tool.
    • Bing Maps are not visible in the output of the "Luxology" render tool.
    • Bing maps are not visible in the output of Bentley Descartes "Merge" tool.
    • Bing Maps cannot be used with Bentley Descartes "Copy Image Area" tool.
    • Bing Maps cannot be used with Bentley Descartes "Corridor" tool.

    Hi Sebastien,

    Thanks for the reply.
    I fully understood that the image was not on my machine; that they are streamed into my current session from the Bing Maps source.
    I undertook the steps you ourlined, not really sure where you were going with them.
    When I changed the property "Inherit GeoCS from Model" from "Not Inherited" to "Inherited", it moved the image 4600kms... :-)
    I was then able to clip the area that was displayed over my area of interest. It wasn't the correct map of course (somewhere 4600kms away) but it certainly did clip.
