Using Descartes to extract vector outline of raster data?

Bentley Descartes 08.11.09.601

I often have rasters representing sonar data that look something like this;

What I would like to do is extract an outline polygon of the area containing the actual data in the red hue. Can anyone suggest a tool or workflow that I could use to get this done? At the moment I am just digitizing the outline which is time consuming and not highly accurate.

Thanks.

  • Are you wanting be able to automatically have a line drawn around the outline of your raster image or are you wanting to convert your raster image to vector or are you wanting to create another raster image from part of your raster image? Can you give us some more information about what you are wanting to do? What kind of output data do you want?

  • Thanks fmcallis, sorry if I was being unclear. I have attached another image below to perhaps explain better what I am after. I have hand digitized the green boundary below. I was hoping that rather than hand digitizing this boundary, Descartes might be able to use the raster to vector tools to extract the green boundary automatically. This image is only a tiny sample of the full size image and there is a continual flow of these so I am trying to find a better method then hand digitization.
