Photorealistic Point clouds

Hi,

Apologies in advance if this has been covered elsewhere but I wasn't able to find an answer to my question.

I've watched the learn server introduction to Bentley Pointtools that unfortunately skips over the process for applying rgb values to an existing pointcloud. According to the narrator it's a simple process but isn't explained at all in the video.

We have an existing point cloud for our office building which we're using as a test case for a process we'd like to understand. This point cloud has no rgb values. We've taken photos and loaded these into ContextCapture to create a coloured mesh of the same building. What we'd now like to do is use the rgb value from the nearest point on the mesh to paint the point cloud data, then detach the mesh and use the photo-realistic point cloud as our data source.

If anyone could advise on the steps required to do this within pointools or let me know if I'm misunderstanding how this process should be approached, that would be much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance,

Neil

  • Neil,

There are no tools in Pointools that allow coloring point clouds from photos or textured meshes. The tools you refer too are "painting" tools to edit or add color manually to a point cloud.

Descartes does contain a point cloud colorization tool. But, it only works for coloring point clouds from aerial images.

To get a colorized point cloud in your workflow, you should look at the point cloud export in ContextCapture. It can produce POD files that are colored. It just won't be able to alter your existing point cloud.
