Using Context Capture to create 3D models of existing railway lines?

Hi all

I have been told by a colleague that Bentley's Context Capture software maybe able to solve a problem I am having.

I am trying to create full 3D scale model of railway lines using nothing more then a series of pictures with the intention of using the model with Bentley Rail Track.

I have attached a sample photo of an existing railway line, if I had several pictures of this site could I use Context Capture to convert these pictures into a full scale 3D model?

Any help or input will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

  • ContextCapture will let you create a 3d model from photographs but it will take a few more than several. Depending on the size of the rail yard, it could take 100's of photos to 1000's of photos. Its important to remember that we can only reconstruct things that are visible in the photographs so lots of photos are needed to reconstruct everything.

For something like this, I would recommend using a drone for the capture. A DSLR on a pole or a manlift/cherry picker would probably also work well with less regulations to get stuck in the mud with than the drones. You might be able to get results taking photos directly from the ground, but I would definitely recommend getting some elevation.
