rolling shutter

Hi,

I'm shopping for a drone for doing mapping and and ortho photos and am looking at the DJI Phantom 4 Pro 2.0 and the new Mavic 2 Pro since they both have 1" sensors. I travel for work and that makes the small size of the Mavic appealing. The fact that the new Mavic also has a Hasselblad camera with a 1" sensor is a plus. However, the Mavic has a rolling electronic shutter which Bentley says isn't supported 'under fast motion'. Does anyone have experience using a camera with a rolling shutter for mapping? Is there a speed / distance-to-subject that constitutes 'fast motion'? Does anyone think that the larger size of the Phantom adds noticeable stability and photo quality?

Thanks in advance,

Scott

The Phantom is a rolling shutter too .. in fact 99% of sensors are rolling shutters .. that Phantom 4 has a mechanical shutter below 1/2000th - but it still isn't a global shutter - not sure about Mavic.

Realistically you need to be shooting pretty high shutter speeds anyway for best effect .. and you won't be going fast. You want 1/1000th+ anyway.

Given the mechanical shutter is less than 1/2000th .. you might assume it takes less than 1/2000th of a second or so to read the data, line by line, off the sensor.

Rule of thumb - shutter wants to be open less than the time it takes the drone to move 1/2 a pixel GSD.

So at 1/1000th of a second and say 1cm GSD - you can move less than 5mm. Working backwards for speed .. distance / time .. 0.005/0.001 .. top speed is 5 metres per second.

Chances are though given a 2 frames per second capture - you will be going slower anyway. Lucky if I seem to fly more than 2 ms-1.

If you were flying faster - you would get a fixed wing .. not a multi.

Haven't looked too hard at the Mavic yet .. but could be interesting .. batteries (flight time) are probably the deciding factor to be honest if a similar sensor result.

  • Thank you James, that's very helpful. BTW, I appreciate your posts on the LSF too.
