Hello,
I'm new to Descartes and point clouds so please excuse if this is a n00b post. I have just tried importing a large xyz txt file into Descartes as a point cloud. I must say I am very impressed at how efficiently it handles large data sets.
Now the full cloud is in microstation I want to reduce the data area down to a polygon shape around my project area. I have found the option clip point cloud but it seems to be very inefficient at doing what I want. The only options I can see are “2d block’ which is a basic 2d rectangle and “3d box”.
Is there no way to use a fence or 2d polygon shape to reduce the data?
Thanks
Brett
Hi Brett, I'm looking at SS3 (beta) and the options are block, slab and shape. The block and shape functions are "2D" on the screen, but clip to a volume - meaning the entire depth of the cloud will be clipped to the limits of the block or shape. At this time there is no option to clip to a fence - if there was, it would be essentially the same as clipping to a block or shape.
I should mention - if you want to reduce the point cloud data and create a new file containing only those points for your project area - then create a shape above the points and place a piece of text inside this polygon that will be the new file name. ie: ProjectABC. Then use the Tile Export tool from the Point Clouds - Advanced tool box in SS3. This tool will export clouds to new files using the extents of the polygons and file names based on the text string. Hope that helps.
Hi Brett,
Not in SS2, we added the polygon clip support in upcoming SS3 release. The SS2 release was more to introduce the Pointcloud in Microstation, visualisation, import\export and 2 kind of clipping.
What you can do is use a Clip Volume in Microstation to see only what you want but you won't be able to export the isolated section you have from your Clip Volume.
For your information in Descartes SS3, we added alot of new feature for pointcloud editing (Edit classification, tile export, smart snap, visual explorer, plane and cylinder extraction). We had a technology preview couple of weeks ago, but I am not sure if it's still available. Also in Microstation SS3, we added the support of 2 D Clip Polygon and you can export the clipped section of your pointcloud.

As Daniel said there was a Bentley Descartes SELECTSeries 3 Technology Preview, which is still running but near its end.
More information about Bentley Descartes SELECTSeries 3 and how to access the second Technology Preview are available at communities.bentley.com/.../193956.aspx.
Thanks,
Mathieu
ok thanks everyone, I will investigate the SS3 beta
