Hi All,
The STM can be created in Descartes... but what Bentley Apps can actually read/view that STM?
I'm specifically hoping that Navigator can view the STM but cannot find any mention of it in the Help file. Can Navigator view the STM and, if yes, how is it attached/loaded/imported?
If Navigator cannot use the STM, which Bentley apps can?
Thanks
Hi Michael,
as far as I know the STM is Descartes-specific format and cannot be opened in any other Bentley product now. A solution can be to export/convert STM to DTM elements, which is the standard element type known to all MicroStation-based products.

Bentley Navigator SS5 can view an STM, but not at it's full resolution and will provide the following message: An additional application is required to display full resolution STM elements and draped rasters. Of course, the additional application being referred to is Bentley Descartes. As Jan mentions, it's recommended to extract the STM to a TM (Terrain Model) element. You can do this via the Edit menu of the Scalable Terrain Model dialog.

Descartes is the product to create and to work with STM, which is not exceptional as also other products (civil products, Bentley Map etc.) create and use own formats with no support in general product line (MicroStation, Navigator).
I agree the terrain model has become often used and standard part of many projects, so STM should be considered as general format with wider support. May be it's already planned this way, but because STM is stil quite new technology, so it has not been implemented to other products yet. Only somebody from Bentley can confirm / refute this.

From Descartes readme file, Navigator is not mentioned as certified product.
Unfortunately STM has been developed specially for Descartes users.
I`ll forward this thread to Descartes' product managers, maybe they`ll have more information to give you.
Thanks,
Mathieu
Hi Mathieu,
It would seem to me that the highest value of a multi-resolution DTM is within a mapping application.. think "Google Earth" type usage or, in Bentley's case, Map. Being able to stream the STM from ProjectWise to Map would seem the best use case for the technology.
But, as in the Hatch case, very large terrain models are unmanageable in Navigator review sessions - so there's a solid case for the consuming of the STM by the Navigator application.
And, I'd think that the more Bentley applications that can consume the STM, the more likely companies are to want to create the STM - which should increase Descarte sales. :-)
Jan: Thank you for the information.

I totally agree with your thought.
Makes sense. X3.
