Point Clouds for a newbie

Hello!

There is a lot of information about point clouds, different programs and wiki articles and I'm not sure what's worth to learn.

Can you suggest some basic information to review (links to articles, videos etc.).

Little information about some basic workflow.

I'm interested especially in creating  DTM, and how to get rid off unwanted information (trees etc.) if isn't differentiated well.

Regards.

And I would use classification to remove unwanted points using the methods shown in this video:

It will be a huge area ~50 km along railway line, and I thing this will be very slow. Is there a way to find the lowest points and create a horizontals by them.

If you want to create a DTM for visualization only

No, I need the DTM only for creating of cross sections, longitudinal profiles and etc. in BRT.

  • You can use Descartes "Smart Snap" to select the highest point along the top of rail to trace the rails or the 3D line follow tool if you have intensities to your point cloud.  This will give you a rough horizontal alignment.

fyi- InRoads ss3 has a "convert rails to centerline" workflow located within the InRoads help documentation.

    This is a test

I will try it. But how will I do the calculation of quantities for earth works if I haven't a proper terrain line? And annotation of existing surface in profiles and CS?

I use this in BRT SS2, and it uses regression points I think. But if the smart snap does multiple snaps between the clicks it will be OK to import as alignment and export the point for regression points.

P.S. Sorry if my English is bad :)
