STM as References - How to turn Off?

 Hi, I'm just starting out working with Scalable Terrain Models. I'm working with reference files and it seems as though when you reference another model containing an STM it can not be turned off in the reference tree. How can I turn off the display of an STM when referencing a model that contains one?

As you found out, the view toggles of STM files that are attached to referenced models cannot be overridden. 
 The workaround is to attach the STM to a dedicated level and turn ON/OFF the display of that level to control the visibility of the STM.
