    Applies To
    Product(s): MicroStation
    Version(s): 08.11.09.608
    Environment: N\A
    Area: Raster

    Problem Description

I need to capture an image from Google Earth Pro to use with my vector data.

    Steps to Resolve

    1.)    Open 3D file

2.)    Define Coordinate System (Tools > Geographic > Select coordinate system)

3.)    Create a new level and make it active

    4.)    Turn On View Terrain

    a.       Tools > Geographic > Google Earth Settings

5.)    Tools > Geographic > Synchronize Google Earth View

    a.       NOTE:  You may have to do the Synchronize command twice for Google Earth and area to display

6.)    Tools > GeoGraphic > Capture Google Earth Image ( This will show wireframe)

    a.       NOTE:  If you do not have an Active Level defined you will not get the Wireframe.  If you have View Attribute set to Smooth you will get a gray image.

NOTE:  In Tools > Geographic you can select Open as Toolbox and place the toolbox and select commands.

    In Google Earth Pro

    1.)    File > Save > Save Image

    2.)    Map Options uncheck

    a.       Title and Description

    b.      Legend

    c.       Scale

    d.      Compass

3.)    Change Resolution to Maximum value

    4.)    Save Image

When you do the Save Image you will be prompted for an image name.  Select the image that shows in the folder and say "Yes" to overwrite it.

To see the color image in MicroStation do

    1.)    File > Save Settings

    2.)    Exit MicroStation

    3.)    Open DGN file

4.)    In View Attribute change Display Style from Wireframe to Smooth

NOTE:  in View Attribute you may have to increase Global Brightness to increase the brightness to be able to see your color Google Earth image.

Steps to create a raster image that can be attached in Raster Manager

    In MicroStation

    1.)    Raster Manager

    2.)    Select raster image name

3.)    Change setting to Place Interactive

4.)    Click on left top corner of the Wireframe and drag your mouse to the bottom right corner of the Wireframe

    a.       NOTE:  Make sure View Attributes  are set to Wireframe

5.)    Your raster image will display

6.)    Right click on raster image name and select Save As

7.)    Change Save as type to GeoTIFF

    a.       This will create a raster image that will have the raster image location saved in the header.  You can also create a raster image that has a sister file.  If a sister file is created make sure in Workspace > Preference > Raster Manager > Georeference that “Use Sister File if Present” is marked.

    8.)    Save

You will now have a raster image that you can attach in MicroStation.  Make sure to uncheck Place Interactive before you try and attach your raster image.
