    WMS performance is slow

      Product(s): MicroStation
      Version(s): 08.11.09.829
      Environment: N\A
      Area: Raster
      Subarea: N\A

    Problem

Is there anything that can be done to improve WMS performance.

    Solution

Try turning Workspace > Preference > Raster Manager > “Display Raster Using an Independent Process” Off and On.  Normally turning “Display Raster Using an Independent Process” On gives the best performance.

Another thing that would affect performance would be the network speed.  In Workspace > Preference > Raster Manager > Memory you can try increasing the percentage of memory to use.
Try changing Workspace > Preference > Raster Manager > Memory > “Limit usage to” to a higher value for example 50%.  It is not recommended to exceed 75%.

The code goes thru the layer wininet the same as Internet Explorer.  The .xwms does not contain the raster data, but simply the connection information to the WMS server and the list of layers that is composing the WMS map.   One particularity of a WMS raster is that it does not have a fixed number of resolutions.  Instead it has an unlimited number of resolutions, which are defined by the bounding box (Map Range Limit) requested in world coordinates and the number of pixels requested in for a particular bounding box.  The WMS is not tile driven, but extent driven.  The size of each packet of data can differ instead of being fixed, resulting in additional processing on the server side.

The only caching or performance is once the original connection has been made a cache entry is made in Internet Explorer.  That would make the connection faster the next time the user opened his DGN file and the WMS file was connected.

Enhancement 408742 has been filed requesting a cancel option when doing WMS attachment connections when the connecting is taking an excessive amount time.
