Workflow: Prepare resources for publishing in 3D Mapping Cloud and 3DM Publisher

This page describes the steps to take to get your resources in 3D Mapping Cloud or 3DM Publisher - the sharing products of the Orbit portfolio.

There is a distinction made between three types of resources:

Standalone resources: these can be a vector file, an ortho image, a WMS service, a textured mesh, etc.
3D Mapping data: a combination of several resources (images, point clouds, photo positions, trajectory data) that can be organized in an Orbit run and used as one resource in Orbit products. More information of the concepts of an Orbit run can be found on the 'Getting started with Orbit 3DM Desktop' wiki page.
Orbit 3DM Run Export from ContextCapture v16: This applies to the specific case when your 3D Mapping data is an export from ContextCapture v16, using the export option for Orbit within ContextCapture. More information on how to do this export can be found here.

1. Standalone resources

STEP 1: ACCESS SHARING TOOL

Get access to 3D Mapping Cloud (https://3dmapping.cloud/)
or
Download Orbit 3DM Publisher (https://orbitgt.com/kb/server_install) + make sure you have a valid license key (https://orbitgt.com/kb/license_activation)

STEP 2: ACCESS PREPARATION TOOL

Download Orbit 3DM Content Manager + make sure you have a valid license key.

Download the Upload Tool
- https://orbitgt.com/kb/3dm_cloud_upload_tool

STEP 3: OPEN DATA

Drag and drop the file in Orbit (in the Dataset list or Map View component).

STEP 4: CONVERT

Check the format of the resource:
- If the resource is an Orbit format: Skip this step
- If the resource is not in an Orbit format: Convert it to an Orbit format. See wiki page on 'Getting Started with Orbit 3DM Desktop' > 4. Convert data to Orbit format

STEP 5: OVERVIEW IN CATALOG

Add the resource to the Catalog Tab.

How to manage your resources in the Catalog Tab (https://orbitgt.com/kb/catalog) ?

Choose the type of resource from the dropdown.

Choose the subtype with the bullets (by default, ‘None’ is selected).

Each column consists of metadata of the resource

Right-click on a selected resource to see the context menu of the resource.

STEP 6: ADD TO SHARING TOOL

For 3D Mapping Cloud: Start the upload through the ‘3D Mapping Cloud Upload’ sidebar (https://orbitgt.com/kb/3d_mapping_cloud_upload)
For 3DM Publisher: Add the resource in the Publisher Console (https://orbitgt.com/kb/3dm_publisher > 3DM Publisher Console).

2. 3D Mapping data

STEP 1: ACCESS SHARING TOOL

Get access to 3D Mapping Cloud (https://3dmapping.cloud/)
or
Download Orbit 3DM Publisher (https://orbitgt.com/kb/server_install) + make sure you have a valid license key (https://orbitgt.com/kb/license_activation)

STEP 2: ACCESS PREPARATION TOOL

Download Orbit 3DM Content Manager + make sure you have a valid license key.

Download the Upload Tool

STEP 3: OPEN DATA

Import 3D Mapping data
- Identify and download the correct template – based on the acquisition system.
- Prepare your data according to the template’s description on the KB.
- Import the data in Orbit. See wiki page on 'Getting Started with Orbit 3DM Desktop' > 2. Basic Concepts
Add 3D Mapping run
- See wiki page on 'Getting Started with Orbit 3DM Desktop' >2. Basic Concepts
- Or drag and drop the orbit_mm_run.omr file of the run in Orbit (in the Dataset list or Map View component).

STEP 4: CONVERT

Optimize all images (https://orbitgt.com/kb/mapping > Optimize Imagery)

STEP 5: OVERVIEW IN CATALOG

In the Catalog, calculate image availability and data volume for the run.

If the dot in HTML5 column is red: hover over the dot and identify the reason why the run is not ready for upload. There are several factors that can cause this:
- The images are not optimized to OMI format (‘Processed’ images).
- The image file names don’t match the names that are referred to in the photo position file.
- The number of images doesn’t correspond the number of photo positions.
- There’s a file missing in the run (no point_cloud.OPC if the run has a folder ‘pointcloud’, no trajectory_simplified.ovt, etc.)

--> Update your run to solve the issue and calculate image availability and data volume again.

If the dot in HTML5 column is green: The run is ready for upload!

STEP 6: ADD TO SHARING TOOL

For 3D Mapping Cloud: Start the upload through the ‘3D Mapping Cloud Upload’ sidebar (https://orbitgt.com/kb/3d_mapping_cloud_upload)
For 3DM Publisher: Add the resource in the Publisher Console (https://orbitgt.com/kb/3dm_publisher > 3DM Publisher Console).

3. Orbit 3DM Export from ContextCapture v16

This applies to the Mapping Run data.
The textured mesh can be prepared following the steps described in the first section of this document: 1. Standalone resources

STEP 3: OPEN DATA

Add 3D Mapping run

- Or drag and drop the orbit_mm_run.omr file of the run in Orbit (in the Dataset list or Map View component).
Edit 3D Mapping run: If the photo positions of the planar camera are not visualized as blue dots in the Map View (check the box next to 'planars'), these should be separately added through the 'Edit run' procedure.
- Go to the step of 'Planar1' in the Edit Run procedure
- 'Choose File' and choose the following file <Mapping run>/planar1/import/import_locations.xml

STEP 4: CONVERT

Optimize all images (https://orbitgt.com/kb/mapping > Optimize Imagery)
Note! Make sure the path to the location of the images is correct in the file <Mapping run>/planar1/original. Change it if necessary.

In the Catalog, calculate image availability and data volume for the run.

If the dot in HTML5 column is red: hover over the dot and identify the reason why the run is not ready for upload. There are several factors that can cause this:
- The images are not optimized to OMI format (‘Processed’ images).
