Setting the folder new Microstation V8i users use

I'll start with an apology - I'm a consultant deploying Microstation v8i for a customer on Windows 7 and I don't know anything about how to use the application. I've searched the forums and done some file and registry tracing but can't find the answer.

When a user who hasn't used the software before runs it, they get an error message because Microsoft Group Policy settings do not allow them to view the C: drive and Microstation is trying to show them a file open dialogue on "C:\ProgramData\Bentley\Microstation V8i (SELECTseries)\Workspace\Projects\Untitled\dgn" so what we need to do is to pre-configure the installation so that the default folder used is on their home drive, not anywhere on C:. If they cancel the error dialogue then it takes them to their own Documents folder which is fine but we need to stop them getting the error message because of the lack of visibility of C: due to the GPO (which we can't change).

Thanks in advance.

  • That sounds like someone with little knowledge of microstation configuration has done this and the changes run only into the users configuration (which intentionally fails for new users). Beside the mentioned document, you can find some advices in the online help in the administration part. The best thing you can do is letting the standard-workspace direct to another drive, thus all project and company setting requirements are going there. Another method could be to create a seed configuration used when creating new users. There are a number off different possibilities and without knowing all the side effects of your system configuration there is surely no one who can say which one fits best.
But you should be aware that Bentley saves a number of data locally, most of them either in the ProgramData area or in the users profile. This is suggested behaviour from Microsoft, and you will find almost any software doing this stuff. Hope you have redirected the userprofile to some other place, as otherwise you will permanently fall into problems, if users cannot create/access needed files. Doing so for the ProgramData area even might be a solution to fullfill the needs of any software that works as suggested by Microsoft.
