Bentley Configuration Explorer

Why does BCE have to run as PC Administrator before Application, User & Project list can be displayed on startup?

  • Hi Dan,
    Sorry we overlooked this one.
As Bentley Configuration Explorer has the ability to edit configuration files I expect that somewhere in the startup it has tripped over read-only folders or files that it expects to be able to write to.
We are looking at an updated version, so I can file a defect to pick this up, the application should be able to read a cionfiguration even if write access is restricted by system policies.
Please can you give us more information about the security permissions on your PC so we can look at that particular scenario? As this information could be sensitive it is probably best to send it to use via a Service Request.
Bentley Configuration Explorer is intended primarily for use by administrators with the appropriate permissions, however as there are tiered administrative levels in many organisations, it may be that running it with 'Run as administrator' is the best approach in some cases.

  • Hi Marc,

We basically have all Bentley apps installed in the default directories (program files & programdata folders) in Windows 7 64-bit with additional "\Program Files (x86)\Bentley" & \Program Files\Bentley" folder security ('Modify' rights for computer Users group), no read-only folders/files for any users (even domain non-Administrators) in "Bentley' folders.

Still domain non-Administrators user cannot see any drop down lists in BCE, the list can only be seen when running as other domain user account who has Admin rights to the computer.

BCE should at least be able to pick up the list even if user has no Admin rights on the computer and run as a read-only session, after all most of the time we are troubleshooting individual user issue on their machine by running BCE using user's account, running BCE with admin user credentials collects different user setting files e.g. ucf.
