Connects Preference file size

Whilst in general i like Connect alot, the main criticism I have of connect is the amount of lag that I experience. Whether that is on opening/switching files, opening cell libraries, switching worksets, accessing the file backstage and even just accessing tools or changing ribbon workflows.

I have found that the connect user preference file is literally compared to V8i. After a couple of months of usage, my connect prefs are 2.5MB. V8i prefs after around 2 years of V8i usage is around 200kb.

On deleting the connect prefs, everything works much much quicker. backstage access and workset switching is instant(as it should be), file opening and switching is vastly improved as is accessing cell libraries.

What is connect storing that is making the prefs so large and unwieldy?

  • Hi Duncan,

I'm having a same issue in my workplace.  I'm using MicroStation CONNECT edition Update 10 - version 10.10.00.23

My .upf file started with 21KB (auto created by MicroStation upon launching for the first time) and a week later, its now sitting on 243KB.And I can concur with you that, because of the file size there is a noticeable lag or slowness in opening files (ctrl+O) etc.

I found your post and I deleted my .upf file. It automatically created a new .upf file and I can see how fast everything is.

Does any one know what is CONNECT edition .upf file saving and why the file size keeps increasing?

I realise there is a configuration to compress .upf file but that only applies if its larger than 500KB. I'm already struggling with 243KB and how slow everything is with CONNECT.

Any help will be much appreciated.

    Thank you.

  • Hi Shyam,

The configuration variables that you mentioned are obsolete, their UPF compress functions were rolled into MicroStation's base code a few years ago, UPF compression takes place automatically.

Recent MicroStation CONNECT updates have focused on performance so you will hopefully find that moving on to update 12 will be beneficial. Would  you be able to update to U12 and let us know if performance is improved?

    Marc

  • HI Marc,

Thank you for your response. Yes, I am thinking to update to U12 for one of our user's PC to test it out.

But there seems to be recurring issue from U10 in U12. Please see this post:
