Hi,
Where can we download the full installation files for UPDATE 6 directly like previous versions without using the 2MB Update 6 updater?
Bentley needs to consider corporate requirements for software deployments which require full installation files to create packages, updater using real time internet connection download is not feasible.
Thanks.
Agreed, this seems like an entirely regressive step. People who've had to deal with the frustrations of say Adobe's web downloaders over the years, even on home machines with no corporate firewalls/proxies to deal with, won't welcome this decision.
Hi David,
in my opinion it's just what many other SW companies have done for last several years. In fact, when thinking about software installed on my computer (which is probably about 150 GB just software), nearly all are available only as installer, that downloads the rest.
In real life, I don't see a big difference between to download > 1GB exe file as in the past or to download 2 MB setup, start it with /layout option and to create own deployment package when offline installation is required. But the second option is less user friendly, I agree.
With regards,
Jan

Hi Jan,
I'm afraid that the second option is impossible for me, at least in compliance with my organisation's security policies. Users get Internet access but no admin rights; admins get rights but no Internet access. It's a Catch-22.
cheers,
David

Then can't you download the pre-installer logged-in as a user? Then run the command-line to create the installable .exe. Then log-in as Admin to perform the installation?

Hi Jon,
My experience (just re-confirmed, right now) is that trying to do anything involving the MicroStation installer, without being in an admin account with full Internet access, is an exercise in futility.
My company is like yours - "normal" users have internet access, but "admin" accounts do not. Our company has many "classes" of users, depending on your job responsibilities - normal user, desktop admins, server admins, etc. When someone wears multiple hats, that person has multiple accounts. What I have to do is is to run the installer under my "user" login and create a deployment image (so the required parts are downloaded from the internet). The "users" account has internet access. Then I have to switch accounts over to an "admin" account to perform an install.
The Deployment Image is portable so if you can create it on a machine outside the network, save to a portable HD, it can be brought in (if there is a security protocol to allow that?) and run as admin from your normal admin ID.
It is still possible to order DVDs of the installation files. I'm assuming we would not create a DVD that only contained the 2Mb bootstrapper :-). You can ask for one via a Service Request.

It's verboten to try and bypass security that way, I'm afraid. I'll need to try my luck with getting an FTP link via Service Request (the variable delivery windows for DVDs does me no good at this exact moment in time, I'm afraid).
