[V8i] Any reason not to have a single user resource directory for different software packages?

I understand why each software package that we use needs its own UPF file.

Is there any reason that other user resources cannot be combined, so that every Bentley package in use sees the same files?
I'm talking about things like

  • Accudraw shortcuts
  • Function Key Menus
  • Mouse button mappings or menus

It drives me nuts that my InRoads SS2 doesn't behave like my MicroStation SS4 doesn't behave like my Inroads SS4 because not all of my user customization files have been copied over or faithfully reproduced between software packages. I would think that this type of file could be placed in a central location, and then each configuration mapped to look in that same spot. But there is concern that the different software versions have different ways of storing that type of information, and that one file wouldn't be readable for all three packages. And I don't know for certain if that is or isn't so.

Does anyone know offhand which release version have compatible data files (like those listed above)?
Thank you.

  • Hi Mary,

These are stored in text file whose format has not changed across V8i versions (AFAIK).

AccuDraw Shortcuts: You could point MS_ACCUDRAWKEYS to the same location for a range of applications and they would be read. MicroStation users would see any shortcuts from other applications if they opened the list but otherwise would not see any difference.

Function Key Menus: The same as AccuDraw, as long as the functions mapped to keys are available in the application using the shortcuts. I don't know about InRoads, but we supply the same function keys file to MicroStation and AECOsim. MS_FKEYMNU.

    Button menus: Ditto using MS_BUTTONMENU.

The worst case scenario I can see is if a shortcut specified by these three points to a function that is not available in the application. the Status bar will show "Unknown key-in or command".
