Creating a "Master Toolbox" containing a number of other toolboxes?

I would like to create a "master toolbar" containing a number of other toolboxes of the same type.  BUT not create doubles of the toolboxes

e.g.

Master Lighting Toolbox which would contain the follow lighting toolboxes:

Exit Lights

Strip Lights

Lay-ins

Down Lights

Wall Mounts

Master Power Toolbox:

Receptacles

Receptacles Special

Receptacles Controlled

Switches

Disconnects

Master Fire Alarm

Detectors

Door Alrams

Misc

Signals

Etc....

  • Hi Steven,

from your description it's not quite clear what is your complete idea and how GUI is expected to work. Do you want something like Main toolbox with "droppable" toolboxes? Or "to contain" in you case mean when an icon at "a parent toolbox" is pressed, a next toolbox should be opened as independent one?

The first option cannot be implemented without programming, because Customize tool in MicroStation does not allow to define droppable/expandable tools (icons). And in fact this approach is treated as obsolete in MicroStation V8i, because toolboxes were replaced by tasks in V8i.

What about to don't define Master toolbox, but to create a workflow with the same name, and to create separate task for every toolbox you mentioned. This solution will be fully compatible with V8i GUI, can be displayed in Tasks dialog (typically docked at left side of MicroStation window) and can be expanded when necessary (and you can also configure how tasks in the workflow should be displayed using Layout Mode setting).

Yes! Main toolbox with droppable toolboxes WITHOUT creating duplicates of the droppable toolboxes.  I am starting to understand that this methodology has been phased out of the Microstation.  So today I will explode the use of Tasks with regard to our work flow.

Our normal work environment / flow: (2D Schematic)

    - Site power layout

    - Site lighting layout

    - Internal Lighting

    - Internal Power

    - Internal Fire-Alarm

    - Internal Systems ( data, communication, TV, security)

    - Internal nurse call

    - patient room layout

  • Hi Steven,

WITHOUT creating duplicates of the droppable toolboxes

I do not quite understand what can be duplicated when toolboxed (or tasks) are defined.

The first option cannot be implemented without programming

I have to apologize for mystification, I played a bit with Customize tool and it's possible to define "Tool Box in Tool Box", so such Tool Box works similarly to Main Tool Box.

But the fact that it's not "V8i approach" and should be not used is still valid. Probably the only exception is when you want to create own Main Tool Box and to replace the default one.

So today I will explode the use of Tasks with regard to our work flow.

It's quite simple: You have to define own Tool Box for every task (in User Tools) and in the next step to create "master task" and to drag created Tool Boxes to this task, so they will become tasks organized under the master task:

It's up to you whether you will configure the master task as task or as workflow and how the tasks will be displayed in the dialog:
