All of these content will be created using generic seed file of Microstation SS4 and will be saved as a .dgn.

I have seen the AECOsim SS6 content

RE: Compatibility of Content created in Microstation SS4 in Microstation Connect versions OR to be used for Open Building Designer

Hi Rohini,

Please can you expand on the types of content that you are creating? That would help us to provide further more specific answers.

There are a number of threads here. MicroStation geometry is forward compatible, but CE introduces new capabilities, particularly the parametric 3D modelling features, you may wish to consider that. These are gradually being integrated into OpenBuildings (AECOsim has been rebranded) and will replace the legacy parametric content tools.

AECOsim/OpenBuildings datasets do change and are not backwards compatible, but previous content can be upgraded with the dataset utilities.

As Bear mentions below, everything in MicroStation is available in OpenBuildings.

RE: Compatibility of Content created in Microstation SS4 in Microstation Connect versions OR to be used for Open Building Designer

One question for you, is there any reason you need to use MicroStation at all. With the extended abilities for 3D in AECOsim, I usually recommend my clients use AECOsim as the base unless there is a specific need for it. The only other issue you may find is that AECOsim locks elements for editing outside of the AECOsim environment. Worth keeping in mind.

RE: Compatibility of Content created in Microstation SS4 in Microstation Connect versions OR to be used for Open Building Designer

Thanks Bob. The end of life for v8i is right around the corner, although I believe it will be extended as Connect still feels like beta. But all this depends on your companies plans for the future, if you're Select customers, go with Connect. The workspace/workset stuff is a bit different (hierarchy).

RE: Compatibility of Content created in Microstation SS4 in Microstation Connect versions OR to be used for Open Building Designer

Hi Rohini,

there are two aspects. One is the geometry. and CE and V8 useses the same DGN Format, so there will be no risk.

The other aspect is the Building-designer Dataset. The default Dataset has changed, lets call it "modernized" but this has the effect, that some Elements change information.

To prevent this, create your own V8-Dataset (maybe just a copy of default) and migrate it to CE later.

But as Bob Rayner said. this is a question of time. How long will your V8 live?

RE: Compatibility of Content created in Microstation SS4 in Microstation Connect versions OR to be used for Open Building Designer

Thanks Bob.

I'm only worried with the talks around Bentley tech support for v8i versions stopping in the near future.

With that in mind, would it make sense to create two versions of the content? One for v8i use and one created using Connect edition seed files?

Please advise.

RE: Compatibility of Content created in Microstation SS4 in Microstation Connect versions OR to be used for Open Building Designer

Hi Jon,

My query was more related to compatibility of files/ 3D content created in SS4/SS6 that is intended to be used with MicroStation Connect Edition, at a later date, when v8i is no longer available.

What would be the risks? Is there anything we can do now, in SS4/SS6 while creating the content(3D models) so that they can be used very easily in the connect edition of both Microstatio nand AECOsim?

Thanks

RE: Compatibility of Content created in Microstation SS4 in Microstation Connect versions OR to be used for Open Building Designer

Sounds like you're setting up company standards, that sort of thing. For the most part you'll be O.K. compatibility wise, but some features are treated/used a bit different in Connect.

My thoughts are if you're setting up company wide content to be used in the future, it only makes sense to use the latest version. Unless of course you're using v8i for many years to come.

RE: Compatibility of Content created in Microstation SS4 in Microstation Connect versions OR to be used for Open Building Designer
I'm unable to get my hands on Microstation Connect version at the moment
MicroStation CONNECT was released commercially in 2015. It is available from Bentley System's software download site. I believe that you must be the registered administrator, or someone approved by the registered administrator, to gain access to that site in order to download software. Or are you asking something else?
