To trace the _USTN_USER and _USTN_USERCFG variable definitions launch MicroStation with the -debug switch. That will generate a text file with each configuration file and variable definition as it processed.

for v8i it would be;

_USTN_USERCFG=$(_USTN_USER)$(_USTN_USERNAME).ucf [C:\ProgramData\Bentley\MicroStation V8i (SELECTseries)\WorkSpace\users\untitled.ucf]

This is the default of how it finds the UCF file.

For him to better understand how it is finding the ucf I would recommend look at a debug.

By default, perhaps those variables link with other variables eventually defining the UCF name and location but they aren't really the cfv vars of importance. Indeed in my own config my UCF is in an entirely different folder outwith the folder which _USTN_HOMEROOT is assigned. The pertinent config variables are for UCF location and name are _USTN_USER and _USTN_USERCFG.

MicroStation has been customized to look to those locations. By default it is not setup to work that way, so someone has changed this. Do you know who in your office would have set this up as they would have a better understanding of what was done.

From the screenshot Adam in on V8i not Connect so path will be the same apart from 8.11 instead of 10.0.0 but Microstation won't look there if it's redirected by mslocal.cfg or by the -wu switch.

looking at your screen shot. it look slike you are uisng V8i. With this ther are (as Duncan has mentioned) a few option that tells MS where to find the workspace.

Have a look in : C:\Program Files (x86)\Bentley\PowerDraft V8i (SELECTseries)\PowerDraft\config (the path will vary for MicroStation)

Within this file. open in NOTEPAD the msdir.cfg and mslocal.cfg.

Within these file, you should see where the workspace is directed too. ie Y:/MicroStation\Config.

This is normally the first in a line of reroutes. Once you have find the file and the paths, then you need to look in a standards folder for cfg files. it might be in here that your UCF is defined.

What version (e.g. v10.x.y.z) of MicroStation, or other product, are you using?

MicroStation CONNECT configuration is different (better) compared to MicroStation v8 configuration.

There are three variables that control its location.

_USTN_LocalUserAppDataPath : predefined and locked

(System): _USTN_HOMEROOT=$(_USTN_LocalUserAppDataPath) [C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Bentley\MicroStation\10.0.0\]
(System): _USTN_HOMEPREFS=$(_USTN_HOMEROOT)prefs\ [C:\Users\u\AppData\Local\Bentley\MicroStation\10.0.0\prefs\]

There are a number of ways including a command switch in the shortcut used to run Microstation or a modified mslocal.cfg to name two of the most common.
