Unable to run Microstation CE update 13 & 14

I need your help regarding the following problem:

1. I am able to run Microstation CE update 12 on the computer

2. I am NOT able to run Microstation CE update 13 & 14 on the same computer. I mention that the splash screen appears the for a short time comes an empty MS  window on whole screen, then MS exists. No exception is found in my ... temp\Bentley directory.

3. I am able to run on the same computer PowerDraft update 14 & View update 14.

Is anyone there that can help me? Any ideas?

  • CONNECT applications cannot run side by side, only one version of MicroStation CE can be installed.

I suggest uninstalling MicroStation CE using Windows Setting/Control Panel, then before installing Update14 delete the contents of the folders:

    1. C:\Program Files\Bentley\MicroStation CONNECT Edition

    2. C:\ProgramData\Bentley\MicroStation CONNECT Edition (assuming that you DO NOT have any unique DGN or other data files in that location!).

    3. C:\Users\<userName>\AppData\Local\Bentley\MicroStation\10.0.0 (again assuming that you DO NOT have any unique DGNLIB or other data files in that location!).

(If in doubt back up the contents of folders 2 and 3)

Do you have full access to your machine to modify software or do you need to involve IT support?

Which version of Windows are you using?

  • This is going to become more of a problem for OpenRoads, as every few releases has an "update" to the design schema. Civil projects are often split between several firms, and files opened with newer versions of the software cannot afterwards be run on the earlier versions. In a perfect world, all clients and all partners everywhere are running on the most current version. But I can EASILY see a situation where Indiana is on one version, Ohio is on another version, and Colorado is on yet a different version.

I am not certain how we are supposed to work with multiple clients effectively when we are only allowed to run one version of the software. I would like to see Bentley address this with some sort of continuity between versions.

I know other softwares don't bother with compatibility between versions, but other softwares also let you load and run more than one version on the same computer.

  • I agree with Mary, This is going to be a very significant problem supporting multiple DOT's in OpenRoads Designer. For many of us the virtual machine option is a non-starter.

I agree with you and Mary, on the other hand it's not the primary topic of this thread and also it's another question from "can be MicroStation installed in parallel", so I think it should be asked and discussed separately, preferably in civil forum.

I am not certain how we are supposed to work with multiple clients effectively when we are only allowed to run one version of the software.

In my opinion there are more aspects to be discussed. There are some technical limitations and requirements defined both by Windows and used technologies (VBA, Parasolid engine...), where I assume (but have never studied it in detail) some workarounds exist, but not always applicable, and probably leading to more complicated and fragile code.

When talking about MicroStation, the parallel installation is not supported by Bentley from (if I remember right) V8i (SELECTseries 2) and even before it was not recommended option for V8i. So to support different schemas and data structures versions have to be a responsibility of product teams. They have to (but obviously they do not) provide solutions or best practices. Because it cannot be expected that everybody will migrate at the same time.

  • Jan's suggestions are valid for testing.

However the issues of multiple versions of design schemas (or in the case of OpenBuildings, datasets) are things we are (obviously) aware of and are discussing.

I will draw the attention of the product managers to this thread.

I'd also recommend opening new threads in the OpenRoads and other product forums for wider visibility.
