I'm looking at screen menus to replicate the old Main Classic Toolbox.Tasks were strange enough; the Ribbon is going to make my head explode. I want my Main Classic toolbar, and I'm trying to make it happen.
What I don't understand entirely is how secondary menus are activated. From this blog it looks as if I can just create saved views for each submenu if they are placed on different levels.I also see in the Help file, a sentence about submenus:
Sometimes it is useful for a screen menu to open another screen menu while remaining active itself. The SCREENMENU OPENSUBPOPUP key-in is used for that purpose.
If I am trying to emulate the Main Classic Toolbox, where I click to get a flyout of each associated toolbox, is that better organized as saved views, or as a subpopup?
I intend to have the screen menu open in its own window so I can keep it up all the time.
Thank you.

the extened menu options are activated by assigning one of the main icons to switch a different saved view in which the level for the extended options are on, in the video at 00:42-00:50.

I would say that its best as a subpopup if you intend to keep the initial menu open. Only reason I say this might be best is that in the view tools it has its own submenus that you might want to replicate. if you did saved views only i could see managing the saved views getting harder.

Why go with a screen menu? I would think making a custom toolbox that has the same tools as the old Main Classic would be much easier.

Well, I can try that, too :-)
There are a lot of ways to customize this, and I'm kind of casting about for the best one. I hadn't made a screen menu, ever, so it looked interesting. But it does look like more work than a toolbox. I'll have to play around. I haven't made custom tools in probably over a decade.
