I may have missed it while browsing through the microstation Help manual, but what's the purpose/definition of the $ operator in workspace configuration files? Any help is much appreciated
It's used to call up set config variables.
As an example, we have our user area locally set to c:\Apps\User\$(username)
HTH.

It's in the docs under Configuration Syntax
https://docs.bentley.com/LiveContent/web/MicroStation%20Help-v17/en/GUID-C59A1F56-F723-853A-0469-83F5859385EC.html
It indicates variable substitution. The value of the variable named in the parentheses or braces that follows the $ replaces the whole $(variable) expression.
Thank you both for the quick responses and clarifications
Kevin - I saw that page but was looking for an explicit definition of the $ character itself. It makes sense now and I appreciate you elaborating on what's noted on the Help page
Yeah, The configuration section of the documents needs some work. Feels like everything is spread over many different pages and with minimal explanations.
One additional note to Bear's example, the variables used can be defined in other configuration files, or they can be environment variables. So $(Username) is substituting in the name of the logged in user and getting that value from the OS environment variables.
Perfect, thanks for pointing that out. A workspace novice like myself will take all the help I can get haha thanks again
