multiple versions on the same machine

I have a question going forward. Let's say that a DOT has standardized on a specific version of OpenRoads (yes - Connect version) and some other DOT has standardized on a different version of OpenRoads. Now my company has won bids for work from both of these DOTs. How can we have both of these different versions available to be used by our different end users ? Currently you cannot have multiple versions loaded on one machine. I used OpenRoads as an example  - it could be any discipline specific product (Building, Plant, etc...)

  • There is a thread on this in the OpenRoads forum, with a hint of some potential future solution.

It's an ongoing problem that Bentley has not yet attempted to address in any form. The best we have, after all these iterations, is the "Downgrade Civil Model" Technology preview in ORD 2020 R3, but even that is problematic because there is no way to run both versions to confirm that the downgraded data is correct. They may be working toward parallel installations in some future version, but it is no help whatsoever as DOT's and such are starting to standardize on the versions available NOW.

    No, we're not happy...

  • That is exactly what I'm talkin about.

    Thanks for that link.

Checking the data for comparison is only a very small part of this problem.

Bentley has now stepped into the versioning data game and has no real solution for it.

  • We're in the same boat, supporting multiple clients using different versions of ORD.

We just went through a hardware upgrade cycle, and rather than taking away the old laptop when they got their new one, they just kept both. This way they can have two computers, each one with a different version of ORD installed.

This is in no way ideal, but alleviates the pain a little bit.

We used to complain about AutoCAD/Civil 3D and their file format changes every few years. The situation with ORD is much worse. Even if/when you can have multiple versions of ORD installed on the same computer in future releases, the 12-18 month cycle of schema changes are still going to be a challenge to deal with.

  • well - just received another project for a DOT and they have used the whole configuration (org, workspace, workset).

    So I have two choices:

    1. To try and figure a way to incorporate the whole thing into my existing configuration

    2. Have a completely separate configuration and try to load it thru a separate desktop icon

Going forward - the more clients that do this, the more this is going to become a real burden.

  • Most of the DOTs I've looked at drop right into my ...Configuration\Organization-Civil\ and ...Configuration\Workspaces\ directories. That part has been easy (relatively) for the resources. Backing them into my project setup is another matter.

The fun part is the disclaimer that basically says "We set this up for our own system, so you'r on your own to figure it out for yours"

Of course, this doesn't even take into account what happens when the DOTs are using different versions of ORD. I'll be sunk then.
