ORD 2021 R1 & 2202 R1 not working in managed workspace

I am experiencing a very strange issue where I am not able to use ORD in ProjectWise. This is only a recent development but I do not know what changed other than I installed ORD 2022 R1 about the time this started. I am able to open and view files but any tool I try to use I either get a message stating Unknown Key-in or an MDL load error. I am not running any addons in the background.

If I open file with either version of ORD outside ProjectWise I can work normally.

Can anyone tell me to begin diagnosing this issue? It seems I am the only one in the company experiencing the issue. I don't customize anything on my computer either. Running Windows 10 Enterprise 19044.2728

  • Apologies in advance, I don't use any of those products.

But I remember reading this thread, could help.

  • Are all the products installed in their default locations? There is an ORD 2022 R1.1 can you try installing that (there's also a 2021 R2, not sure if you can install that as well).

Go to your C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Bentley folder and rename the OpenRoadsDesigner folder to OpenRoadsDesigner.old. Then open your 2021 product, close it then open your 2022 product (without ProjectWise). Then try in ProjectWise again.

If others log in on your computer and try it does it work? If you login on somebody else's computer does it work?

On a machine that works for somebody else have them open a file then run the key-in Show Configuration. Have them save the text file that opens somewhere you can get it. Do the same on your computer. Use a text compare utility like the Compare plug-in for Notepad++ or WinMerge to compare the 2 files. Unfortunately if your working directories are different you'll have a lot of mis-matches but you're looking for something flat out missing. Might be a set of dgnlibs or an entire variables.

    Thanks for the information.

I performed the operation you suggested with no resolution.

This is very strange. I opened some files in other datasources and ORD works. It is only in my company's datasource that ORD does not work for me. I've reinstalled ORD 2021 R1 & 2022 R1.

Guess I will dump PW and reinstall that now.

  • Generally when I see this type of thing in our managed workspaces it's usually some variable overwrote some system values. Since it only affects your machine it may be something in one of the config files installed locally. My recommendation about renaming the OpenRoadsDesigner folder in LocalAppData resets all the user preferences for all the apps.

When you reinstalled ORD, did you uninstall first or install over the top?

Even if you uninstall first, the uninstaller doesn't remove files that have been modified from the shipping version, and the reinstall won't overwrite an existing file so frequently the local configuration is retained.

It's annoying but sometimes we can fix this by:

    • Uninstalling the app
    • Delete the folders for the app (if they still remain) in:
      • Program Files
      • ProgramData
      • LocalAppData
    • reinstall

You might try going into your working directory for the datasource find the wksp folder and delete all the cfg files in it (it should only be cfg files in there). I'd try that before reinstalling yet again.

Also, copying the config files from a working machine might help as well, and is easier than reinstalling, just be sure it has exactly the same version as yours.

  • So, I guess I have this issue resolved. I did end up opening the different versions of ORD and viewing the configuration variables in the backstage I deleted any variables defined at the User level. Now things seem to be working.

There are many occasions that i modify some variables in the backstage so I can do specialized tasks or experimenting. I am not in ORD very often so I must have changed something a while ago.

There was a point in time where i was using One Drive to store my personal.ucf and some other preference files and I would point ORD & Microstation to that location so not matter what I opened my preferences were the same. I haven't used that for a while though.

    Thanks for the ideas.
