Does anyone have any documentation that explains how to simply configure Microstation for individual projects including the support files needed or to be created.

What version of MicroStation are you using? (found in Help > About...)
Have you looked at this section of Help > Contents?
If you have not yet, that is recommended, as there is some really good information in there that might help answer your questions.
