Deleting Indicators

I created a bunch of indicators which will finally, be never use. Unfortunately there is one reading in each one. Is there a way to delete those indicators ? At least, is it possible to change the indicator type, so I can use those somewhere else ?

  • Hello,

The indicator I try to delete did not raised any alarm. But it was used to create a checksheet and a work order.
Also there is one reading associated to this indicator.
Someone at Ivara told me once, that if an object (Indicator) in the database has relation to other (reading) it cannot be delete. Is it true ? If so then I guess it explain why I can’t delete my indicator.

Generally you should be able to simply delete the indicator. The readings will be deleted at the same time. There are a few situations where the deletion will fail. For example if any of the readings had an alarm which was acknowledged with a work request or task, you can not delete the indicator. Have you tried deleting the indicators?
As for changing the indicator type this is not permitted once readings have been entered for the indicator. Changing the indicator type would result in a situation where the first reading related to one "indicator" while the following readings relate to the new use of the indicator. This could be misleading if the someone was reviewing the indicator history in the future.

At one point what you were told was true; an indicator with readings could not be deleted. However this restriction was removed a number of releases ago. I'm not sure of the exact release when we removed the restriction, but it was a number of releases ago.

I had not tested the scenario where the indicator was on an work order task when I first replied. I did try creating a check-sheet from a standard task, but not with a work order task. The deletion does fail when the indicator is on a work order task. If you delete the indicators from the work order tasks first you should be able to delete the indicators.

If the deletion fails, the message that is issued should tell you relationship is causing it to fail. You should then be able to use the Indicator's Usage view to identify the object (e.g. work order task) that you need to delete.
