User noticed that the upload and synchronization times of Bentley Mobile Inspection with APM Foundation was excessive. Post synchronization the Mobile Inspection application's performance dropped and was slow to scroll and launch objects.
The mobile computing activities in APM Foundation were found to be excessively large. The user had over a dozen checksheets (mobile computing activities), each one containing 50 indicators and each indicator containing a photo linked in the Instructions field. The size of the photos were 200KB+. The resulted in a total synchronization on the order of 200+MB.
It was found that using "ctrl c" and "ctrl v" to copy photos and paste them into the Indicator > Instructions field would result in the photo being reformatted. This reformatting would greatly increase the size of the photo as stored in the APM foundation database and consequently in the Mobile Computing Activity shared with the IOS/Android Mobile Computer
Although large synchronization packages can slow synchronization times for APM Remote and Bentley Mobile Inspections, the consequences are less acute with APM Remote due to some additional tools that reduce the impact, such as differential download and auto-scheduled synchronization. For IOS and Android devices, these features do not yet exist. Additionally, for IOS and Android devices, the large package amounts of data will slow performance as all of the data is actively loaded not stored in a database like it is with APM Remote.
There are several workarounds available to alleviate these problems immediately for IOS and Android Mobile Inspections;
1. Remove all unnecessary photos from the Indicator Instructions field for those Indicators where photo's aren't necessary.
2. Reduce photo size prior to linking a photo
a. Ensure that it has been formatted into a jpeg.
b. Use a third party JPEG optimizer tool to reduce file size without reducing quality. A 25-50% reductions in size from can still provide sufficient detail in a photo to communicate effectively with the Inspector.
c. Crop photos for a further size reduction.
3. Save the photo to a folder on your local machine. Drag and drop the photo into the Indicator's Instructions field. Drag and drop does not reformat the photo.
4. Do not open the photo and right-click copy.
5. Do not save the file in a non-photo format such as a word or excel document.
In cases where users have full wifi coverage across the facility:
6. Save the photos on an accessible server or website. Copy the url only into the Indicator Instructions field. This way end-users still have access to highly detailed photos but only as needed.
