Fixed value attributes data source

Is it possible to use the database from a seperate system as the data source for a fixed value attribute.  We are using Oracle and eB 15.5.1.  If this is possible is there documentation on how to do it.  Thanks for your help.

  • Hi Alex,

How to connect to an external DB for the fixed value list is mentioned in eB Administration Guide.(pls see p 47-48).To create fixed value list with Oracle DB as Data source in Director click on ... near your attribute and in opened box select "Lookup" and tick checkbox  "Provide values from lookup list" as in screenshot below.

Then click on "Data source"  select Oracle as a Database Provider and fill in Data source, Used Id and Password fields as below.

After doing this select "Query ",enter your query text and press OK button.

Prerequisites: On Application server Oracle client must be installed and database address is  defined in tnsnames.ora file.

    Regards,

    NT

  • This seems easy enough which I thought was the case.  Now for the tough questions.  :-)

    1.  How is this effected if a value is used in eB and then they decide to take the value out in the other system?

    2.  Can we switch to this if the attribute already exists in the eB tables and has been used?

    Thanks for your help.

  • 1. The removed values will remain in the instantiated objects' attributes. If an object is edited, then the old value will no longer be available.

    2. No. Once you use a manuually defined fixed list, you cannot switch between that and a db lookup. To use the same attribute name, you would have to delete the attribute values from all of the objects, delete them from the attribute definition, then enter your query. Alternatively, you could rename the old manually defined list attribute, remove it from the object classes and add a new attribute with the name you want.
