I have declared an attribute in the documents object, called "Hyperlink" and it is of type Character.
When I create a new document and type a path to a server drive in the Hyperlink field it seems to change to a hyperlink.
When I put the mouse curser over the link the curser changes to a hand with a pointing finger.
The problem I have is that when I click on the hyperlink, nothing seems to happen. My expectation was that it would open the directory in the hyperlink in my file explorer.

What version of eB are you using?
On eB 15.6 this is issue where you can see hyperlink link but it does not actually design like that. This has been resolved in version 16.X where you do not see those hyperlink and hand icon

Thank you for the answer, however you are not the bearer of good news. :-)
I am using 15.4.1 If I understand you correctly the functionality to use hyperlinks did not work in Version 15, but it will work in Version 16.X.
We are busy upgrading so it will hopefully work soon.
I do have a Version 16.7 test sytem. Will test it there.

Seems like you misunderstood.
eB is not design as per your requirement stated above. However, those hyperlink you won't see in version 16.X
