I have a demo repository that was located on a different server, I have copied over the entire vault with the files and the repos file.
I then through the storage wizard brought the repository up but the properties of the storage device shows external as ticked and greyed out.
How do I remove the external repository tick?
As shown in the SMC it shows External -No in background. Please try to uncheck Write enabled and then see if the other check box gets enabled. If they get enabled uncheck "External"
Restart the services from component services and see if properties gets changed.

Also, could you look at the properties of the Device that the repository sits in. Look to see what driver it is using. It should be the 'Windows File Driver', if it is the host for a standard repository.

The issue was I set it to the eb file driver and not the windows file driver.

I have looked in the manuals but it does not differentiate between as to when each one should be used.
