We regularly get errors in our mail queue within the SMC. Some are legitimate and easily fixed, but there are a couple of errors that consistently recur.
"Unexpected end of file while parsing Name has occurred. Line 7, position 1109."
With this one, the message body tag is not closed properly for some reason: eg, it ends liek this:
</initials><s
The other one we see a lot is:
"Service not available, closing transmission channel. The server response was: 4.4.1 Connection timed out"
What are the root causes of these errors? Are they bugs?

Mat
Mat,
There are two issues here.
Firstly "Service not available, closing transmission channel. The server response was: 4.4.1 Connection timed out"
You are experiencing some errors in the Mail queue, which I believe can be resolved with an Exchange server setting. Please see social.technet.microsoft.com/.../441-connection-timed-out
I think basically what happens is that when a distribution occurs and maybe a large number of Mail jobs enter the queue, most go through but some do not. The link above suggests that you can set a connection timeout:
Open EMS, type:
Set-receiveconnector -identify "your receiveConnector" -connectiontimeout:00:30:00
Is this something that you can progress with your Exchange Team?

And the second issue (Unexpected end of file while parsing Name has occurred).
This is a bug, which should be unique to Crossrail. The happens for a standard eB ‘New Work Task’ message; more frequently for Review&Acceptance workflow; The issue relates to the fact that there is a field with a limit on the number of characters, and this limit gets exceeded. Resubmitting the failed jobs won’t help. These e-mails are generated automatically, and the subject title is taken from one of the fields is eB which is simply too long.
It has previously been logged as TS 12801, and is still due to be resolved in eB 15.6.1. Until then, unfortunately there is no workaround, and the e-mail jobs must be deleted.
Hi Rich
I hope I am not being rude by adding a question to your answer to this post.
I am experiencing the same issues and see this error in the mail queue on a semi-regular basis. My question is - what is the error threshold for the email queue before it disables itself and therefore stops sending email notifications entirely. I need to develop a strategy to monitor the mail queue so that it does not meet the threshold.
Thanks, Alistair
