GPS connection cutting out intermittently.

GPS connection cutting out intermittently.

A customer is using MapCapture. This is based on Bentley Map V8i (SELECTseries 4), which itself is based on Microstation. The number of MapCapture users is very small, so I will ask my question here, because it is about the GPS functionality which is identical to the one in Microstation.

They use MapCapture on a tablet PC running Windows 10 Mobile. GPS device type is set to Windows Location Services, as the tablet PC has not got an internal GPS antenna.

Problem is that the “GPS signal” (virtual, as we are talking Windows Location Services) frequently cuts out, indicated by the GPS Connection Status’ green circle becoming red. This may happen after 5-20 (varying) minutes of use, during which the GPS worked, after which it is very hard to reconnect.

They also tested an external GPS antenna (“GPS mouse”) connected via Bluetooth. In this case they used the real GPS signal, as opposed to the Windows Location Services signal before. Same behaviour, which is strange, as it is using a completely different kind of input now.

Location is northern England, which should have sufficient mobile phone network coverage for Windows Location Services.

Anybody has had similar experiences like these?

Cheers, Kai

  • Hi. We have experimented with the GPS functionality on MapCapture as well as Microstation and they effectively exhibit the same behavior. However, I believe the situation is not as bad as you assume it to be. I think the confusion comes from that green/red light in the GPS dialog. The light doesn't directly indicate a connection or disconnection of the GPS. It is green when the application receives coordinates from the GPS and it's red when it doesn't receive coordinates anymore. The thing is, we only receive new coordinates when we are moving. If you stay in the same location, after a few seconds the precision will become good enough and the gps will stop sending new values. At this point the light will become red but the gps functionality still works well. Just test it out by starting to move again. You should see the light become green.
I hope this clears it up.
