The EToN Technical Specification provides a feature called EToN Ping, which allows you to send a 2400 EToNping notice to a web server. The receiving web service should then return the DfT details of that organisation in its response. This allows you to check if there is an issue connecting to or receiving from an organisation without sending a live works notice.
To Send an EToN Ping notice:
Log in to the Enterprise Manager console on your web server
2. Using the navigation tree on the left, expand Application Deployments
3. Select the Java Web Service (JWS) of the system you want to send the notice from (some users have multiple web services running, 1 for live 1 for test etc)
4. Click the Test button within the Web Services box:
5. Change the Operation list of values to EToNping
6. Tick the Edit Endpoint URL box
7. Insert the notice URL of the system you want to send an EToN Ping notice to in the Endpoint URL box.
8. You now need to set the Input Arguments for the notice as follows
SchemaVersion = Enter the version of EToN you want to send the notice as. For example 6.0 for EToN 6.
OrganisationID = Enter the DfT organisation reference you want to send the notice as. Most will set this to their own organisation reference to start with. If the test fails then try using the reference of the receiving organisation – if the test is now successful then the receiver is using software which validates the sender of a notice and doesn’t recognise your organisation code.
DistrictID = Enter a valid district from the organisation you’re sending the notice as.
9. Click the Test Web Service button to send the notice.
10. Check the results. In the example shown we sent an EToN ping notice to Virgin Media’s live system which successfully returned its organisation details:
