Hi, Dear All,
The model is about a hammer head design. To compare with two modelling options in RC Pier. I used both "Hammer Head" and "Multi Columns" pier configuration options to design it. I found something inconsistent for the cap auto design in shear.
In Hammer Head model, the auto design gives
while in Multi Columns model, it gives
I know that we should not always use auto design, but it can be good start sometimes. The question is about the stirrups spacing in the column and cap joint part. In hammer head, it gives 3 in. while in multi columns, it gives 24 in.. I am wondering whether there is some special requirement in the AASHTO code for hammer head shear design. Could you please help me explaining this difference?
Thanks,
Dong
Hi,
without the RCpier file in hand it will be difficult to explain why there is difference in stirrups spacing.1) One thing I can suggest is to check in the Geometry TAB --> Structure Model under Shear Heading if the options selected are different for Hammer head design and for Multi column pier cap design. If the options selected are different then make sure in both the files have same option. Please see the attached screenshot.
2) Please check in your files if you have selected Strut and tie method to design pier cap for hammer head and general method for Multi column Pier cap design.
3) In leap RCpier Tutorial Manual, In Tutor 2 and 3 detailed hand calculation is provided , Please go through the calculation for better understanding .
