Leap Bridge Steel Deflection Calculations

Hello,

I am new to Leap Bridge Steel and have a few questions:

1) What method is used to determine the deflections of girders for the HL-93(Deflections per AASHTO)? I am comparing the deflections for 2 girders with the same properties and the same girder spacing and overhang (1 is 11 girders in the span and the other is 12 girders). The deflections are different. Is there anywhere i can find the calculations Leap is using for this? A solution document?

2) Is there a place i can get a report for the girder properties (Composite I and Non-composite I)? The girder input screen only shows area.

3) Is there a way to view the superstructure typical section with the girder spacing and overhang dimensions labeled?

  • 1) Deflections --

HL-93 -- The deflection information in the live load output report on the analysis tab is total sum  of both the full truck and lane deflection, and does not follow the deflection criteria of AASHTO 3.6.1.3.2.

HL-93 (Deflection per AASHTO) -- Design Truck 25% is created in the library for HL-93 (Deflection per AASHTO) vehicle description

I would suggest you to check FHWA Steel Design examples for deflection calculation.

    2) User has to Analyze and then Design and then click on Design check and select the section properties option under parameters to get the appropriate information.

    3) Click on Generate Drawings button on the Tool bar then select the cross section option and then set a Drawing path and click on Generate Drawings.

under drawing list your should be able to see the Cross section view of the bridge.

  • Is this still true that the reported deflections do not follow the deflection criteria of AASHTO 3.6.1.3.2 in the current version of LEAP Bridge Steel? If so, will this feature get implemented in a future version?
