I am trying to start a new project and need to organize seed files for design models before creating files. We are using multiple Bentley products eg. Microstation CE, OpenRoads, OpenBuildings, OpenBridge Modeler, etc. From My understanding, all the standards should come from configuration and the seed file will be a blank platform to start design which will have a basic setup like working units, views, model names, etc. (which I am not too concern). The only thing I am trying to understand is, seed file for OBM and OBD and all the other software mentioned before have .dgn file. So, What is the difference between those seed file, can I exchange the seed file across different software? If yes, would I miss something? Is seed file designed to work with a particular software package?
For example,
In order to use OpenBridge functions properly, do I need to use the seed file provided with the install? Can I use an existing seed file that I use with Microstation for 3D modeling if units and all other settings are the same?

Jaimin ... the units used in the file are most important. You will want these to be the same across disciplines and for all files used within the workspace including drawing and sheet seeds as well.

Hi Steve,
Does it matter if I am using the seed file that I used to use in Microstation V8i? I will be working in mm/m units across all the products, our Microstation V8i file is configured properly and approved on the project, don't want to use any unofficial seed but at the same time, I want to make sure that the Microstation v8i seed will work with OpenBridge Update 8.2.
Has this question been answered?
Since OBM delivers a specific 3D seed file for OBM, one can only think there is something "special" about this seed file that is not contained in a MicroStation or OpenRoads Designer 3D seed file
Hi David,
The "special" thing is the units of resolution i.e. the options under the Advanced Settings (in the images above). Basically, those settings will support the creation of one solid along a path that has a length of 10000/unit of measure. Usually, MS or ORD are not creating long 3d solids, while OBM is creating solids extruded along a path.
Vlad - Thanks for the verification!
It appears that the other "Imperial" seed files delivered with OBM and all of the "Imperial" seed files delivered with OpenRoads Designer are using Master Unit = US Survey Feet and Resolution units = 10,000 per Distance US Survey Foot (consistent = good). On the contrary, the "Imperial" seed files delivered with MicroStation CONNECT - Update 14 are using Master Unit = Feet (not US Survey Feet) and Resolution Units = 10,000 per Distance Meter (not Foot <or> US Survey Foot).
This has already caused an issue for us... just wanted to alert others!
Well, the civil products (OBM and ORD) are in sync because they use the same framework and they are specialized products. MS is a general product that can do everything so, there are differences between them. In OBM and ORD we use survey foot because of the site requirements.
Ideally you will want a workspace that everyone is using regardless of product. Many have chosen to use OpenBridge for everyone in the structures department as it has all of the MicroStation tools in lieu of having to install a variety of products and configurations.
