LEAP Steel Wind Load Application and Lateral Moments

I have applied wind to my model at the Initial stage, to check the bare steel  under its self weight +  wind and at Final, to perform the standard Strength I, III, V checks.

I would like some clarifications:

  • How is the wind applied? In the wind input form, I checked user input and input a pressure. Will Leap determine the load on the flange (k/ft) per LRFD 8th 4.6.2.7.1-1?
  • In the initial condition ( steel only), will LEAP apply wind to all beams, top and bottom flange? And if not , how can I achieve this?
  • In the final condition , will LEAP apply wind to the bottom flange of the fascia girders only? And if not , how can I achieve this?
  • Is LEAP computing the wind moment and stresses per LRFD 8th C4.6.3.2.7.1-3? And if not , what  calculations does it use?

Thanks,

Leo Marcatelli

  • I have asked the same question before and haven't received a detailed answer, except to learn that LEAP Bridge Steel won't do anything with wind loads if you specify a line girder analysis. -Ross

  • On this topic,  I have received the following response from Bentley which i am sharing since this is a very common issue:

    Leo,

Currently the WL is not used for design checks.

Analysis results for WL is under review and will be finalized in the release scheduled at end of this month.

The WL is considered differently under line girder and grillage analysis.

Under line girder the WL is applied equally to each girder.

Under grillage analysis the WL is applied to exterior girders only and then the effect is transferred via cross-frames and deck to all girders.

The program is using STAAD engine for analysis.

If you need to use analysis results and compute the flange stresses due to WL (outside the program), please wait for the next release.
