Hey,
I have a query regarding the column design on LEAP Concrete. The design output on the 3ft x 3ft reinforced concrete column as per AASHTO LRFD 8th Ed shows this error below for max spacing between longitudinal rebars.
Using 5 ~ #9 bars on each face with #5 ties.
As per LRFD 5.10.3.2 max spacing of reinforcing bars, it says that it should be less than min of 1.5*thickness of member or 18 in. It looks like the program checks as per LRFD 5.10.4.3 with 6" max clear spacing on each face when the column is designed for plastic hinging capability. I don't have any seismic load group for the bridge and plastic hinge option is disabled already. But when I increase one bar on each face, it passes the check.
Can you please clarify further on the spacing error as per LRFD 5.10.3.2.
Thanks,
Jivesh Kumar
I tested this issue and the program is not checking as per LRFD 5.10.4.3 with 6" max clear spacing on each face.
As per my testing the maximum spacing the program is considering is 9" and above.

Thank you for your response Vinay. But I still don't understand why the program shows the spacing error as per LRFD 5.10.3.2. Referencing the image I attached previously, having 36"x36" column with 5~#9 longitudinal bars (both face with 3" clear cover) and #5 ties, the clear spacing and c/c spacing between the longitudinal bars are 5.7775" and 6.9055" respectively (both less than 9"). Please let me know if I am missing something. I have attached the snapshots of the output below for your reference:
Please email me the file as it is difficult to figure out where the issue is .
My emailID is "Vinay.Mysore@Bentey.com"
Hello Vinay,
I have the same issue. Can you please let me know what is the reason for the error with 5.10.3.2.
Thank you.
Vinay,
Sorry for the late response, I have emailed you the file. You can go through the column design under substructure for the issue I mentioned above.
Thanks!
Vinay- we'd be interested in your response as we are seeing the same error messages in column output. We believe the messages are incorrect. Conventional column design, no plastic hinging or seismic considerations. Spacing of column longitudinal steel not controlled by 5.10.3.2, or by 6" clear requirement. Not sure why a 9" spacing would be checked. Thanks
Scott,
It was a bug in the program earlier I believe, Vinay told me to update the software and it's not showing any error now.
Please update to the following versions:
