Good afternoon, previously you explained how to enter Vp to initialize shear resistance when designing web splice connections.
Could you please explain if LEAP calculates the horizontal force in the web that exceed the moment resistance provided by flanges? AASHTO 6.13.6.1.3c.
Or if LEAP designs the flanges to take the whole force and the web has to be designed just for the smaller factored shear resistance?
Thanks,
Ariatna Jacome
Hi Ariatna,
The initial implementation of Field Splice Design was based on 7th Edition. The major update was carried out once 8th Ed. was published as the design forcecomputation was Simplified and this has been implemented in the program.
Maybe we don’t show the reference explicitly, but the design force tables would relate the computational steps. The intermediate results would relate to the new methodology.we support both of the methodologies; user can carry out their design on both and compare the results.
If Moment Capacity provided by Flange_pos > factored design moment _pos and Moment Capacity provided by Flange_neg > factored design moment _neg Horizntal force is considered as 0.0 as there is will be no additional force on web splice.
If Moment Capacity provided by Flange_pos < factored design moment _pos and Moment Capacity provided by Flange_neg > factored design moment _neg
Additional Horizontal force on web splice is calculated.
Please let me know if this is the information looking for.
I hope it helps.
