QUESTION: While Modeling T Beam Bridges, how to model Different Beam width for Exterior and Interior Girders?

ANSWER:

Please follow the below mentioned procedure to Model the T beam bridge with different beam Widths.

1)  Click on the ABC wizard then Select “ Post Tensioned CIP Box “ and then “T-Beam”.

2)  Input all the span and cross section information with the Beam Web width equal to 36in.

3)  Select the Support type and then input the material information.

4)  In the Conbox window --> Project TAB make sure your Section Type is T beam Bridge.

5)  In this example Exterior girder will be modeled as 24" wide and Interior Girder will be modeled as 36".

6)  Go to Cross section option and in the new window click on Section and check if all the relevant section information is right.

9)  Make sure the web thickness is equal to 36in.

10) Then click on Add Variant and give a section name as Sec2 then under "Loc In Span" heading keep the percentage as 0% then under Section Variation keep the     option as Linear.

11) Then input the Struct Depth = 6 ft , T slab = 8in ,I-Web thick = 36in.  Under Other Parameter Select “LEG WEB THK (LEG= Left edge girder) “ and under parameter value input 24” or 2 ft.

12) For RIGHT EDGE GIRDER , click on Add Variant and give a section name as Sec-3 then under "Loc In Span" heading keep the percentage as 0% then under Section Variation  keep the option as Linear. Then input the Struct Depth = 6 ft , T Slab = 8in ,I-Web thick = 36in.  Under Other Parameter Select “RIGHT WEB THK “ and under Parameter value input 24” or 2 ft.

13) Follow the same procedure at span locations 50% and 100%  .

14) By following the above procedure user will see that the exterior girder thickness will be changed to 24” and the interior girder thickness will be retained as 36in.
