10. RStock - Rolling Stock / Bridges for HSR - High Speed Rail

The 10th Training Example option in RM Bridge Enterprise is 10. RStock - Rolling Stock and it's an advanced training example for a series of dynamic analyses of a bridge model under an HSR - High-Speed Rail system. It can be accessed under File\Example\TrainingExamples 10. RStock - Rolling Stock, as shown in the screenshots below.

The RSA - Rolling Stock Analysis is known as a series of dynamic analyses of all the possible moving loads considering the train configurations and speeds. For HSR bridges it's well known that the trains with high mass and high velocity usually cause an intricate structural interaction with the bridge structure. In this scenario, the static analysis is frequently insufficient, even for very simple structures, due to likely resonance effects.

The image above illustrates the analysis of the response behavior for one specific point in the structure for one trainload configuration with one velocity. As shown in the table above, several load train types with a different number of wagons, wagon length, axle distance, and axle load must be analyzed.

One bridge structure RSA - Rolling Stock Analysis is the dynamic evaluation of multiple possible load train configurations at different feasible high speeds.

This analysis of a moving load effect is quite demanding computationally because it involves several TH - Time History analyses for the multiple possible scenarios needed to ascertain which combination of load train configuration and train passage speed causes the worst case for the key elements, positions, and directions. National design codes usually limit the acceleration limits due to fatigue and user comfort criteria. The table below shows one example of different train configurations and speeds for one structure and the plot indicates the relevant cases with structural resonance.

The necessary structural model level of detailing is important as the structure vibration depends on the structure definitions. Support conditions, masses, and damping are key in this process for getting the natural modes and eigenfrequencies. As the relevant excitation frequencies could be determined in advance to minimize the efforts RM Bridge offers in \Extras a Fast Rolling Stock Analysis for detecting resonance cases. Then, the detailed TH can be concentrated to be done only for the determinant relevant scenarios. The level of displacements, rotations, accelerations. internal forces and stresses can be compared with the static analysis. More information can be found in the Training document.
