AECOSIM-write lock on Master 3D Composition file

We are pretty much following this workflow:

We have several „container“ files with drawing models and sheets and a group of people is working on these files separately. When creating new callouts in the container files we get this message and are not able to create new views/drawing models, as far as I can understand, because the " first one“ takes ownership over the composition filel where the views are stored.

Below is the message we get if somone else has taken over

This reminds of „Activate“ command but with that one you just deactivate and the file is open for others to work on. It is not the case here and we only get  the message:

Is there an option to "unock" the compsition file?

Can this  be solved by any setting…. or config variable?

AECOSIM/Microstation is known for its functionality in group working….I do not understand how this can function in a work group…or am I misunderstanding??

  • Where are these callouts created? We have only had luck if they are Created in the Master itself. Then the Drawing Model is created and someone works here.

  • Call outs for the plans are created in the Master 3D Composition file and for the sections, elevation and detailing on the plans in the draw files from the first call outs. It seems though (as shown on the figure above) that all the saved views are stored in the Master 3D compistion file, no matter where they are created.
  • Correct
So I am trying to find where you are having the error. in what file is someone receiving the error?
Is anyone in that file at that time?
Is anyone in another file that has that file active?
Has anyone had that file active, made a change and now back in their own file but still have the ability to undo a change in the reference in question?

Just trying to see if anyone still has it open or active or did have it open or active and sill some link remains for undoing or redoing???

  • Helgi,
Our office uses same approach you describe.
Create callout views in 2d floor plan. When using this method, it will activate composite file
to be able to write saved view back to 3d model. As you have noticed this will also put a lock on composite
file until you either close your 2d file or manually release lock on composite file through reference dialog.
I have requested that file be automatically released after creating view to allow better workflow in multi user environment.
As explained to me, the reasoning for not automatically releasing lock is to allow
undo buffer to remain during user session for activated composite model. It also allows for adjusting clip volume
in 2d file without constantly having to reopen composite file.
Undo buffer for composite file will be cleared if lock is manually released through reference dialog.
While I understand conceptually this logic, it causes issues when working in a multi team environment.

  • Maybe just a pop-up letting you know what is going on.
If it has to be locked for these features to remain.
