problem with cut view of solid with hole in the center

I was making a more complex model (hollow core slabs) where I noticed the problem. So I tried it in a new model with basic solids, to see if that problem also appeared. Here is the setup:

I have a simple slab solid. I attached a part to it. I also have 2 slab solids, one at the edge and one in the middle of the big one. You can see the setup with a clipping applied to it (image 1).

When subtracting the solid at the edge, it seems perfect (image 2), but when subtracting the one in the middle the solid doesn't seem solid anymore (image 3).

I also noticed when using the clip volume in other directions (plan view or parallel to side view) the section is ok, when using the parallel to front view clipping (which is the direction you see above) the problem accurs. It looks like the front view settings are ok, just the cut view settings don't seem to work?

I opened your file and did move the items so I could easily cut one section.

Now this may be a workflow thing as I KNOW that the WORKFLOW is not apparent "unless you already know how to do it".

I select the Drawing Composition tool for SECTION

I select a seed that is for a Building or Detail Section

I select the section cut as you see it

I don't like the automation process - so I don't let it create a sheet or Drawing Model

I name the "Saved View" that is created

And then I will open the Utility - Saved Views and apply that view to a Window in this file to see if it is like I want it

    It WORKS for me

  • This did not show it well so I've added this next screen shot.  Note that view 5, 2 and view 4 are actually cuts.

I changed the mode to illustrator in view 5 to make it more apparent.

Notice your smaller piece is very thin.

  • eric, thanks for trying this.
My routine is more or less the same (only I use the 'clip volume' tool in stead of the 'section' drawing composition tool, but this is very simular.
Could you try this with a part that has a style like mine in the cut view settings (thick line and solid fill) attached to the solids?

  • This is a good example of why the WORKFLOW is crucial. There are steps that I am missing to that as I am not currently in production and forget the subtle tasks in between phases of projects.

An example is the model properties for this should be adjusted to show what SCALE you predict this to be used when placed onto a sheet. This is NOT a 2-way decision - which it should be. Notice the Section Marker is probably out of scale . Changing the models Scale at this time would be part of my workflow.

Here is another example of a WORK SESSION TEST Bentley Could do. Follow, Polish and improve this WORKFLOW to be obvious and intuitive and without issues.

  • Don't use the clip volume tool as you have the section or plan tools.  These have all the settings available for you.

OK here is with concrete, masonry and brick - from my part library

    The work fine in elevation

The Solid can hide the pattern as the colors may be the same

The angle can distort the pattern as seen but it does plot right and if you hover over that edge it looks correct.

Not that my materials here use the geometry mapping to pattern the sides for Brick and Masonry.  Concrete No.
