AECOsim SS5: Extract top and bottom area of BIM objects with features / booleans

Hi,

We have to do several boolean operations to slabs and columns (and to other BIM objects), and after, we have to quantify those objects.

For example, we are doing a boolean operation, using the tool "Unite Solids" (a solid modeling tool) over two slabs. Then, we use "Element Information" on the final slab. If we review the Quantities tab, the area of top and bottom don't changed... I upload a video to explain it.

If we use the tool "Quantify", the top and bottom area of the final slab is not calculated!

Then, how to extrat final top/bottom area of an object with a feature / boolean operation?

  • Hello Xavier,

The tool does not unite the slabs to one single object but unites them as 2 different objects. In your example the bit you've selected, shows the half that you've added (see the green dashed lines). If you would now change the thickness of the slab it will only change it for that part you select and not the complete floor. You can even delete the part you have added by using the Delete Building Features tools.

Then what does Boolean Unite mean? Sounds like Parts Section Unify, which is a different kind of unite.

  • Nasir,

Put yourself in the designer's shoes. What the designer would like is a clear report on the quantities. He is not really interested in Booleans or future modifications to the solids.

Maybe, Bentley should put out a 'recall' on AecoSim wrt quantification. It is clearly not fit for purpose. Other cock-up's include the fact that nested stuff in Compound Cells will not be quantified.

I hope that there will be some dev resources earmarked for updating the quantification and data manipulation tools in the near future. AecoSim users are typically behind the curve wrt info-centric BIM workflows, but will increasingly be called to book here.
  • Hi Dominic,

    @ Dominic
Thanks for your reply, I do understand what Xavier wants, I am only trying to show that the tool doesn't work on Building Elements (floors, walls, free forms etc).

    @Fostertom
Boolean gives the result, which Xavier is looking for, with solids only. Boolean is a platform tool and not a ABD tool.

  • Nadir,

    The SR should stand.

The TF quantification tools would not report the platform solid areas. And will not report in the TF format according to top, bottom etc. The user won't be able trt between those whose elements whose TF Quant's are valid and those whose are better off using the platform solids values. This makes aecosim a joke for any kind of quantification.

The lack of solid foundations for quantification will also prevent aevosim from being a credible BIM platform.
